No, they were on heat the evening before.

I'm not a fan of interventions myself but my calving spread has gone to hell in the last few years and I was thinking, with strong and plentiful heats this season, it might be worthwhile to do to maybe get 2 of them in calf in the first 3 weeks and the other maybe 10 days later than waiting for the second heat(assuming a 60% pregnancy rate)?
Whereabouts are you cows in Cork are very slow to show heat with the cold weather.

Jaysus everyone around here are saying the cows are coming on heat but not showing any signs even with tailpaint it's hard to pick them up. I had maiden heifers the were bulling all winter that are at a standstill now

I have 5 maiden heifers running with the cows for AI for the first time. 4 bulled in 6 days but the rest with the bull are just working on their tan.

Good soil temp and a bit of moisture here is just heavenly for growth. Horses for courses I suppose.

Link to a few details for a vacant position on the farm I work on.

Is there a F&F jobs thread buried somewhere?

Letting cows off to lighter covers 1000 for today and tonight. I recon too much waste on heavy covers with what rain has been forecast. What the rest if ye doing?

Bit of heat promised after today will move things along.

How many straws would ye take out of the flask at one time 4/5? Uses up fairly quickly but would'nt like him to be standing around to long.
7 cows done this morning and heifers will be finished today only we missed 2 I reckon with **** weather.
fair going with no intervention and only 2 weeks in

We're not getting the amount of rain that you seem to be getting. Grazing out without any damage. Growth flying. A few dry days together to take bales would be great.

    Growth 92
    Farm cover 1013
    Cover/lu 260
    Lu/ha 3.9
    Kg/Ms/cow 2.37

Cold wet miserable **** of a day here, doing something similar here .just putting on rain gear here too and off to strip some of my pit of wholecrop,8/9 days quality grass ahead of cows but we've had over 100mm of rain in last week here today included ,clean out not satisfactory and don't want to waste any more grass.need dry warm weather pronto to speed up grass growth, get fertiliser out and cut first split of silage

I only thaw out two together, but I'm down to only one 1/4 cc functioning gun. I don't usually thaw out more than that anyway as you could have the odd cow that would be difficult to get through the cervix and take a bit of time.

    Wheels coming off here fast..

Let cows out into my driest paddock. Giving silo at milking time. Hopefully weather will improve soon.

Ironically have ten acres of silage very near fit to cut. The joys of a fragmented farm.

not sure about that, next deluge after today is expected Sunday night into Monday
Our climate has in recent years displayed 6 or 8 week patterns of similar weather, were about 3 weeks into this one, which doesn't bode well for silage season :(

Hmm I would think the same. Relief guy who covers 3 technics in my area in a rotation was on today. Used one gun thawed out 5 straws put one in gun and other 4 in the sleeve and in his back

I've often thawed out a straw, put it in the gun and driven four miles to an out farm to Ai a cow and it has worked out the best. I just put the gun on the dash with a bit of heat on to keep it warm. I'd have the cow ready to run up the crush when I get there.
