At face value that's all it seems to be really,a few corkonian cousins went on the tear and it got out of hand,I highly doubt the fellows in question meant any disrespect.Sh1t happens. Who in that group though it would be a good idea? Its common knowledge on the mainland to generally "Don't mention the war" or at least no Hitler jokes unless your calling him a ****. At the very least they must have known the following would happen

1. People will be offended
2. We won't make friends with the locals
3. We won't get served
4. It'll increase the chance of a scrap
5. We'll look like a bunch of Dicks

Guy in my local bar used to slap girls on the arse when he was drunk. I wanted to cave in his face every time he done it.
Anyway, every country has a minority of prats. Ours just happened to go on tour unfortunately.

It's not so much the history books - I'm sure they're well aware of the history - but it's respect of local cultures that seems to go out the window when you Irish and you go abroad for yhe first time.
