There are always limits on free speech, you aren't allowed to shout 'fire' in a crowded auditorium for example, there are people who don't hold with misleading the electorate and even those who take the 8th Commandment seriously.

Personally, I think that the posters are an absolute gift to equal marriage supporters, probably more so than any pro-equal marriage poster I've seen. I think it's a shame to take them down but that doesn't make anyone doing it a thug, just a bit misguided.

I completely agree. Free speech should be reasonably limited.

And, the people tearing down posters are doing themselves no favours. That rarely does anything except draw more attention to it in practice. See the uk protein diet "Beach Body" ad defacings for recent evidence. That company has never seen as many sales since they put up a controversial poster which got a load of airtime.

I'm sure most people saw the petition going around Facebook for DCC to make the mural permanent. It was sent to me by a gay friend and I refused to sign it saying I didn't want to look like a fool. Queue the "I'm surprised at you, "homophobe" response from him. I then explained my reasoning in that general purpose science would have made the decision on the mural's permanency long before DCC had made it.

I'm now considering voting no out of spite.

    I'm really mature like that.

No. We're voting as to whether or not homosexuals, who are equal citizens like everyone else in a republic, should be allowed to marry each other. It doesn't mean we think less of them if we vote no.

Homosexuals are denied the ability to marry the person they love.
    Heterosexuals are not.

The ability to marry the person they love earns heterosexuals certain rights and privileges from the State.
Homosexuals cannot access these rights and privileges because they cannot marry the person they love.

If one group of people get special rights and privileges from the State but another group are denied them then they are not equal.

Don't posters get taken down in every single referendum and election?

Don't see what the big deal is Happens all the time. Think they should be left up they annoy anyone from a single or knows someone in a single parent family. Backfiring big time.

They look like Ninja's and more importantly they are passionate about their beliefs, whatever else you might say about them and their tactics they do have style. I may not agree with everything they said but you gotta look at it from their perspective for decades gays and lesbians lived in silence or else emigrated because of the stigma associated with how they were born. Taking that into account not really surprised a group of protestors would tear down No posters.

They're not being denied anything, if they're not entitled to it in the first place. The equality argument is getting tiresome.

That's like saying punching a black person is racist but using a racial slur isn't. Away have a lie down or something.

You believe a NO vote is akin to a racial slur? Wow.

The irony of the yes brigade ripping down posters having their mural crumble.

Do you know the NO side are spreading lies? The support for their argument is so weak that they've resorted to misinforming the population with scare tactics to garner more votes. It worked but I think it should be illegal. You shouldn't be allowed to make people believe the referendum is about an entirely different issue in order to gain more support for your side.

    ARTICLE 40

1 All citizens shall, as human persons, be held equal before the law.

    'Tiresome'... oh deary deary me.

It must pain you to be on the wrong side of history. I pity you.

Yes, people are currently being denied it, and we are voting on whether or not to continue denying that right. Not complicated.

If people continue to be unable or unwilling to see that this is about equality, people are going to continue explaining it to them. It's tiresome for everyone, but apparently necessary.

What I want to know is how are you all voting on the president's age thing, and why they even want us to vote on that in the first place?

Defacing crap posters is dead serious. Your mammy might find out.

You have been warned. Even dressed as a ninja, mammy knows what you're at.

OK, how about a no vote is akin to voting no to allowing black people to marry.

A very weak argument for voting no.

I wonder will this vote be like when Bart Simpson was seemingly class president elect...but everyone thought it was such a foregone conclusion that they didnt bother voting and bloody Martin won?

As said, I'm not registered...I may register though, just to stick it to the religious weirdos.
