Is size and type of fuel an issue????

Surely youd be into a decent example for smaller money if you went petrol???

They will already be paying 2 litre tax on a 320d - wonder if a 320i - or even a 318i could be picked up cheaper.

They aren't the best in base spec tbh - seen a 318i going through an NCT - same vintage - looked very plain inside.

Leather makes a massive difference in the E46 - especially if light coloured.

Could always try making an offer on the M sport that matches the base model - its just 300 euro - so I guess the worst that will happen is the seller will say no.

Only issue I guess with M sport is I imagine you will have bigger wheels - and sports suspension as well - which they may or may not like ride comfort wise.

Believe it or not they actually do need a diesel as my uncle does a lot of driving all over the country for work. He has a company back but he has a bad back so is looking for a car, something to use at weekends also.

Going to look at the one they wanted in a few minutes anyway! It's their money!

EU symbol will be in same spot as current one,

Centrally locating would look stupid/ruin lines of car and negate the whole airflow increase from the grilles.

Was thinking that alright with the Zunspsort grill. Might look better alright with the square one. Limited place to put it in fairness!

I can remember someone on here a few years back fabricated a type of removeable number plate mount using the tow eye hole and the bolt part of a tow eye. They could screw it off and on whenenever they wanted and just pop on and off the cover. Looked good. Might be something to consider SG

SG - the car can only take in so much air, putting the plate in the middle of the mesh isn't going to make it take in any less in the real world!

Honestly I think it looks absolutely sh!te on the corner of the bumper :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,815 ✭✭✭✭Dord

If it was me I'd stick it on the bonnet above the grille. I dunno if that's legal though, possibly we restriction on height of the numberplate.

Could you put it at the top of the windscreen on the inside? Where the tax/insurance ect often goes or maybe centered. Idk how it'd look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭Gavman84

I'd try it In between the two grills on the bumper but get a smaller one maybe.

    Some italian plates

Phase 1 and phase 2 gtvs and the early 166s have it in the middle

Myself and 166man drove into Ballycoolin one saturday monday and the man at security remarked to both of us that he never seen alfas with the plates in the middle.
Plates to the side are only a recent addition on alfas from the 156 onwards

I really don't want to piss on your parade,I really like that car... It's a savage machine in fairness, and is always kept immaculate! But I really don't like that plate on it, but it's your car at the end of the day :)

Are there legality issues with visibility from the front? I'd imagine it's difficult to read from the left otherwise where a centre mounted plate would be visable? Or is it a case of as long as it's the right size you're all good?

That looks even worse than what's currently on it, and that's saying something :p

I'm with MM on this one - it's not going to be living on a track, it's a road car. The intercooler isn't going to be pushed to its limits. Sticking a massive intercooler on it has only introduced more turbo lag with minimal heat dissipation gains, number plate or not.

There's nothing stopping you removing a number plate for a track day either.

There are only two legel sizes as in original pic.

    Plates must.

    Be forward facing
    Horizontal
    EU and county symbols
Made of 5mm plastic or metal

    etc

Aesthetics don't bother me too much, possibility of getting hassle would however and the lack of throttle response by blocking a large section of the lower grille.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,925 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

the lack of throttle response by blocking a large section of the lower grille.

Any lack of throttle response won't be from blocking the grille - it's a direct result of fitting a large intercooler. It's extra space that needs to be pressurized every time you come onto boost.

It doesn't matter how much air is hitting the outer faces of the intercooler, they won't pressurize the air inside it any faster. That's all cooling related. Even if you blocked the front it would be a net loss in a few hp due to hotter air going into the engine, nothing to do with throttle response.

The wait till next Friday feels so long :) although I'm working tomorrow, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday and then off the rest of the days and weekend next week although I'm working bank holiday Monday. Anyway the days pass a lot quicker when working.

As for the number plate I ultimately prefer them centred but thing the way it is now looks grand not sure if I'd be as mad about putting the square there I think the way it is would look better. Just my opinion on it anyway.

Just saw a car in town there where'd they had tried to turn an L plate into a N plate with some red tape! Didn't work too well tbh...doubt the gardai would let it fly either. They are hardly that expensive!:pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,972 ✭✭✭Chris_Heilong

guys, let him give it a shot. If he does not like it he can think of putting it in the same spot as everyone else:D.

I will do a quick photoshop for SG so he can see how it would look.

The day I was sitting my driving test the next person after me was pulling in. White sheet of paper and an L drew on it with a standard pen so it didn't even stand out. One sheet stuck to the front and one to the back talking about setting a bad first impression.

They do exhaust systems/tyres/wheels, I might go for an exhaust for some added oomph.

Sure for 50 euros they could probably give you half a tyre or maybe just the sidewalls or something like that :pac:

Actually did you get sorted with tyres I remember you looking was it hankooks you went for in the end.
