Solid run there M. I'd be quite happy with that.

Cheers bud, mile 7 was my favourite as I spotted a guy in a Spurs across the road so screamed 'YID ARMY' as I tend to do to any Spurs I see about. He loved it :)

    Tuesday

    4 Miles Recovery

    12:15, 12:01, 12:31, 12:32
    Average pace 12:20

The knee creaked a little, but besides that my legs felt great.Nice weather for it :)

    Wednesday

    1m w/u, 5m m/p (10:10), 1m c/d

    11:00, 10:10, 9:17, 9:32, 9:24, 9:34, 11:25, 11:54 Ave 10:18

I decided to let myself go and give myself a harder session than it should of been with the majority of marathon miles 45 seconds under what it needed to be. It was a perfect day with the traffic disappearing when I needed to cross main roads, the sun beaming down which meant all was good with the world. My legs just felt so fresh for the first four miles, with my cadence really pulling me along once the initial freshness had worn off. In Horse Racing, some horse are deemed to be 'spring horses' which means they tend to come good with the sun on their backs which feels like me right now :).
I decided to make sure that I went out while the sun was near the peak of its powers as I feel I need to prepare for the marathon to be a hot one. I may even start wearing black in my training to absorb the sun even more.
Finally starting to feel the weight coming off now which bodes well.

    Great stuff.
Have you nailed down a time yet and are there pacers and will you follow one?
What date is it on again?

Time is beginning to enter my mind, although I am going to wait until I know how my body is on the day and what the weather is like.
4:30 and 4:45 have a pacer, so i would imagine I may go off with one of them.
Monday May the 4th is the day of truth and I must say that I am starting to get excited now.

    Thursday

    4 Miles Easy

    11:15, 11:30, 11:36, 11:06

A rare late run for me due to Aintree taking up me time studying the form. Legs felt great once again.

    Friday

10 mins on a Dublin bike at effort level 8

    Saturday

    2.75 Miles Easy

I missed a quarter of a mile as I was near home miles behind going through the Grand National form. I should of kept running rather than bothering, still confused how a horse who needs soft ground won it.

    11:38, 11:05, 0.75 miles @ 11:09 pace. Average pace 11:19

    Sunday

    16.25 Miles Lsr @ 11:57

    11:34, 12:12, 12:28, 11:57, 12:06, 12:00, 12:08, 11:39, 11:57, 11:53, 12:04, 11:44, 11:32, 11:40, 12:12, 12:00, last quarter of a mile done to round up the weeks miles @ 12:47 pace.

This was much more tougher than the week before's 18 miles. Maybe as my legs were more tired than last Sunday when I had only done easy miles in the previous 17 days.
I only went out at 1pm in order for the wind and rain to pass with porridge inside me for a change rather than running on empty like normal. To counter having food inside me I only took two gels instead of the three this week. The longer miles were all up hills.

    Week 15

    35 Miles run this week.

22 days to the Milton Keynes Marathon!

I will put your comment down to taper madness, it must be about that time by now? ;)
Obviously I was referring to the miles that took a longer amount of time.

Anyway you should be watching the masters? 'Mash potato'!!!

    Tuesday

    3 Miles Recovery @ 12:33

A nice early run ahead of a trip to Fleetwood to watch Fleetwood v MK Dons which ended 0-3 leaving which closed the gap on Preston :)

    Wednesday

4 Miles easy with 6 x 100 meter strides taking the day to 5.08 miles.

    10:17, 10:13, 10:23, 10:46, 10:09, 12:39 for the 0.08 miles.

I got out for this early enough despite the wind and rain hammering me along the coast of Blackpool and feeling a little worse for wear after a few drinks the previous evening.
My legs were going quicker than expected for this, which is a good sign ahead of the MK Marathon on Monday May the 4th. I wanted to see how they felt 24 hours after flying, due to fears that flying will tighten up my calves.
I had to stop in a McDonalds after 1.5 miles for the toilet once again.

    Thursday

    3 miles easy

My stomach woes continued, giving me a moody start to my birthday (36 years young) and another toilet stop in McDonalds after 1.5 Miles. I lost interest in pushing this run up to 5 miles so called it quits after three miles. I'm sure the continued poor diet and late night drinking had an impact on my stomach woes. The sea was nice and calm and the sun even came out which was pleasant!

    Friday

    Rest day thankfully

We traveled up to Ayr via three trains in preparation for the Scottish Grand National on the following day so the rest day had perfect timing. Things got worse due to our B n B double booking our room leaving us homeless for the next two nights. We ended up at a Travelodge by Glasgow Airport leaving our morale somewhat low.

    Saturday

    1.89 Miles easy @11:30

Toilet issues once again had me running very close to the hotel and give up after having to use the toilet twice during this run no doubt made worse by my weeks awful food and alcoholic diet :)
Had a nice day out in Glasgow rather than bothering the commute back to Ayr and watched the Racing in the pub which saved a few quid.

    Sunday

I was hoping to get my LSR in this evening but decided to push it back a day due to travelling back to dubs and needing to eat too close to when I would of had to run.

It has not been a great week for running, but I am seeing lots of positives with all runs done after tomorrow which has kept my legs ticking over, plus my legs have had no injury concerns (Touch wood).

Its starting to feel that way in the last month. No red meats in the six days leading up to the race should help things.

    Monday 20/04/15

15.17 Miles lsr @ 11:22 (1.22 Miles more than planned to make up for Saturdays 1.1 ish miles missed).

I decided to wait until ten so that the sun was warmer and also wore black to attract the heat in order to be ready for warmer weather should it be a scorcher on race day. I also decided against breakfast and did not take any gels in order to make it that little bit harder. I did allow myself to take one bottle of lucozade sport for fear of dehydration after the previous heavy weeks drinking.
I did my usual one mile toilet warm up before setting off towards Sutton station, along Clontarf, down to Fairview before pretty much climbing for pretty much all of the last four miles up the Malahide Road.
My legs felt great after only 1.89 miles in the last two days, so it was hard to reign things in to the 11:45 pace I was looking to do so just went with it.

    Splits

    11:27, 11:31, 12:03, 11:27, 11:19, 11:17, 11:23, 11:16, 11:17, 11:21, 11:07, 11:41, 11:19, 11:12, 10:47, the last 0.15 was at 12:02.
As I said above though, the legs felt great and I can honestly say I had a lot more miles left in my legs today which you can tell by the last mile being 10:47!
11:22 per mile would put me in at 4:57 in the marathon, so with carb loading the night before, breakfast, gels, the other runners towing me along as well as the clapping and cheering of the crowd, this run has given me enormous confidence of still being on for sub 4:30

    Week 16

28.14 Miles run for the week

Two weeks until the Milton Keynes Marathon :D

    Tuesday

    3.20 Miles Recovery

    12:36, 12:05, 11:57, 0.20 @ 11:25
    Averaging 12:10

My weeks running was already one day behind, so I thought I would get this recovery run in this morning before a trip to everyone's physio Ecoli tomorrow morning. The legs still felt good :).

I watched the Paris Marathon last night and was interested in little bits of advise that they were giving to viewers as the race progressed.
The main three that stuck in my mind were-

Try to run on different types of terrain in order to give your legs a break from concrete.
Try to do your warm up and cool down on grass without shoes or socks on.
Always gulp your drink at the same time as breathing in which will give less chance to getting a stitch (I think I do that one anyway).

    Wednesday

    Sports Massage

Ecoli said that although my calves were still a little tight, they improved quickly to a massage unlike previously. Another great boost of confidence after Mondays great training run :).
I felt a little ill all day after this and also had a strange sensation in my left hand. I'm told it can be the toxins released that cause this so I was not concerned.

    Thursday

4 Miles Easy with 6 x 100 meter strides and 6 x 200 meter recovery pace in between.
    11:50, 11:33, 11:29, 11:02, 10:58
    Average pace of 11:23

No signs of illness today thankfully. My legs never feel great for a few days after a Sports massage, so I started it off at recovery pace and gradually increased the pace. I don't tend to sweat much but I was sweating and breathing heavier than normal no doubt due to my legs still coming to terms with the massage and also the nice weather.

Another sign of good news is the cooler weather coming in and sticking around until next Saturday. Hopefully it stays cooler for the next 48 hours past that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 412 ✭✭MKDTH

I had two rest days come just at the right time as my left calf felt like it had a minor strain after i maybe over did it 24 hours after a sports massage.

    Friday

Hip and Knee Exercise, plus foam rolling.

I have been so busy in the past two or three weeks that I have really neglected this area, so was pleased to get this in.

    Saturday

    Cross training

Just 10 mins on a Dublin bike effort level 7 for the first time in a few weeks to hopefully assist with my cadence.

    Sunday

    8 Miles Easy @ 11:31

    Splits

    12:15, 11:35, 11:27, 11:22, 11:12, 11:16, 11:30, 11:35

I thought I made a breakthrough on Thursday when I run without having to come back to use the toilet after a mile, but today was back to 'normal'.
Calf seemed okay on this rolling course that fitted in well with the eight miles needed with miles 2-4 up hill, and 5-7 down hill. My cadence didn't kick in until the rolling hills stopped.

    Week 17

16.2 Miles run as the tapering kicks in.

I weighed myself to find that I am now 11lb lighter than when I began this training cycle in January.

I have had a quiet enough week which has given me time to think about my aims in the race.

    A. To run the full 26.2 Miles without walking
    B. Sub 4:30
    C. Sub 4:45
    D. Sub 5:00
    E. To beat last years awful time of 5:45

    8 days until race day.

    That's a fairly wide range !

What's the target going out. Are you off out aiming at 4:30 ?

Yeah I'm just going to try and enjoy it. I am going out at 10:15 pace which is about 4:28 pace in order to allow for a few extra meters that I will no doubt run.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 412 ✭✭MKDTH

I will just follow the 4:30 pacer, but with only one pacer I will need to keep an eye on the clock myself in case he gets injured etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 412 ✭✭MKDTH

    Monday

No running again due to another planned rest day but some minor injury concerns.

Both of my calves are slightly tighter than I would of expected considering I only had a sports massage five days ago, but will get through that.

The other is a blister on the ball of my right foot, the same area of my right foot where I got a blister after about 8 miles in the half Marathon!
I just did a search on here and noted that it could be due to my shoes being a little too tight, or too small. I recall buying my shoes in December and the guy in Arnotts trying to check where my big toe was like I was buying a normal shoe rather than runners that need room when my feet swell. I did want one size bigger but thought he knew what he was talking about so let him talk me out of it!
I've tried various running socks of late with the blister reappearing every now and again and I'm now pretty sure its not the socks, which leaves the shoe!
So my options are to put a big blob of Vaseline on the affected area before a run, although this may apparently wear out after about ten miles. The other option is to run with my older runners which I have had since last May. I think this may be the best ploy as I still been wearing them twice a week on lower mileage runs and doubt they have done the 500 miles that normally show they are worn out. I don't think it would be a great time to be buying new runners and only having three or four small runs to break them in before the marathon.
I've also taken the soles of both pairs of runners out to air them so they may hopefully go back to their old shape should they of changed.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill. Pop a Compeed plaster on it. You won't even notice it's there.

    Cheers, will do.
I checked the shoe size last night and sure enough my newer runners are the same size as my normal shoes where as my old pair are a full size bigger.

I just woke up with something worse than a nightmare - cramp in my calf! I've not had this for a few months and Ecoli always thought the triggers were lack of potassium, dehydration or not having my leg straight. None of these were the case and I still got it!
Normally cramp in my calf causes a calf strain which means I can't really run now to race day. I will see if Ecoli can take a look as it will need to be done ASAP to allow toxins to pass out of my body.
