Chicory coffee

Watching a recording of Kew on a Plate and they were showing Camp Chicory Coffee.

Childhood memories came flooding back of delicious unique coffee flavour drink made with hot milk.

Anyone know where I can get some in Dublin?

Think it was called Irel coffee here. Difficult to get hold of now - try CarrollsIrishgifts.com - you could also try wholesale.foodireland.com but I think they are wholesale only.

I have fond memories of it from my childhood too...

My memories of it are less happy - can't abide the stuff. But I've seen Irel on the shelves in Dunnes - still used in cooking.

The less said about this abomination the better but when it last popped up on the forum back in 2008 it was still for sale in Dunne's and SuperValu/Superquinn.

I believe in the Channel Isles during the German WW2 occupation they made a coffee 'substitute' from dried parsnips.

If you have a recipe looking for a shot of irel just use espresso.

Sainsburys have a nice "french-style" coffee with chicory in it if that's any use to you.

Remember partially substituted coffee being on sale in the early 90's. It was a coffee chicory blend and tasted like ass. Would not personally recommend.
