Illusion settings on engagement rings!!

    Hi All,

I'm currently looking at engagement rings and have found one I really like online ...
I went into a jewellers today to enquire about getting it made, and the jewellers told me they don't make any illusion settings rings as they don't think they are secure settings and sometimes the diamonds can pop out...

Jewellers said it was an illusion setting, it is 5 small round diamonds surrounded by a number of smaller diamonds to create one cushion shaped bigger diamond - hope that makes sense.

Does anybody have any experience with these kind of settings?
Any feedback would really be appreciated.. I'm really confused now as I taught this would be my ring and was so excited :( ...

My ring is an illusion setting and I'm very happy with it, so far the diamond is still safe and secure despite being dropped twice (and flung once). I haven't had it a super long time though I must admit, just three years.

Mine has just the one stone, idk if maybe that would make it more secure than if the ring had more stones.

Is illusion setting when instead of one central diamond, there is 5 smaller diamonds that looks like 1 from far away? If so, my sister in law has that and has had no problems. Set in white gold. Bought abroad.

Hi CBFi...... Yep the ring I'm looking at sounds like your sister-in-laws :) .. Lots of smaller diamonds to make up one bigger one :) ..
Thanks for the feedback .. Really hard to find any info on these kind of rings :(

Also thanks MistyCheese for the feedback :)

I was just wondering what this setting was had not heard of it, but I get what you mean... Have you gone to a few jewellers maybe to get different opinions on it.. Lets say if you got two yeah will make it and one no, then you could go with the yes..

Or would you consider getting a second hand ring maybe a lot of the older style rings sound something similar to this so maybe you could get one and get it cleaned and re-sized etc..

It might be worth it just to know. if you are in or will be in cork by any chance call to tourquise in Ballincollig I must say he is very honest. Even with things like re-sizing and what would work and what wont work...best of luck with it

    Hi Poledancer.

I'm training as a goldsmith, so if you post the picture of the ring you have your eye on, I can give my somewhat inexpert but honest opinion on the setting.

If it's the setting I'm thinking of, they can perhaps be a bit delicate for a ring which is likely to be worn everyday for many years and is going to get a lot of knocks over the course of its lifetime.

Even very delicate settings can be repaired / replaced of course, but it can be a difficult (& stressful!) task for the goldsmith, & expensive for the customer. I can understand why some shops would be reluctant to sell this style as there could be significantly more regular aftercare compared with other styles.

But if you love the style, and are prepared to take your goldsmith's advice on maintenance (not forgetting the cost of this!) sure go for it! If you can't find anyone to make it for you, I can post the picture in an Irish goldsmith's forum & see if you get any takers.
