What are these extra rails?

    On the Maynooth line near 12th Lock in Castleknock there is a tiny stretch of track with 2 rails inside the main rails. What are these for?

    They are rails to help contain any derailment, you normally see them on bridges or where the rail line is close to a sheer drop

    At this point, the line crosses the M50 on a curve. The check rails help prevent what would be a very nasty derailment

    The idea being if a train derailed the inner rails would hopefully catch the wheels stoping anything from falling over the bridge.
