Can anyone recommend a good reasonably priced portable airband scanner? I've read mixed reviews on the ones available in Maplin. I'd rather purchase a good quality one online if possible.

Everything depends on budget, Maycom 108 I think it is, have it years does the job. Tad small but perfect for in your pocket with an earphone in.

I actually had the same question a while back.

I got this airband scanner coupled with a antenna I bought in a local store. Works out very nicely :)

How big is the antenna roughly? Is it a chore to bring it around with the scanner?

It's a big enough antenna yeah, you'd have to place it down somewhere like on a table although it can fit in backpack easily. I didn't buy the one that the OP linked me to, though.

If you are near the frequency broadcast location, it should be sufficient
