    Hey guys and gals,

My trusty 3 and a half year old laptop seems to have finally started to die. Today the bottom 40% of the screen turned green and purple so I'm guessing the integrated GFX card in my i3 processor is overheated and kaput.

My current machine is a 15.6" i3 with 4gb of ram and it has served me well.

Looking for something with decent specs for the budget, willing to go smaller screenwise if needs be. Not really worried about gaming but would be a nice bonus if I could have the option of playing the odd game too.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers,

    JALS.

I bought a new laptop on Dabs.ie recently. I use it for surfing the internet etc, nothing fancy. Reconditioned, but it was only €218. 4gb memory and 500gb hard drive.

Thought that was decent value. They seem to have a large selection too in case you are looking for something higher spec

hmm for me minimum i would recommend to go for an i5 pref. 3rd or 4th generation ones with 6-8gb ram.

i've been checking laptops for a while and ebay altho second hand (some of them still have decent specs)

    samsung series 5 (NP540U3C)
    Lenovo X230 / X240
    Lenovo G50
    Asus UX302

These are the ones i like but again so many options

also check out the seller "exdemolaptops" on ebay

Only place I can find those sort of specs for 500euro region is dell where I can get an inspiron with a core i5 5th generation, 8gb ram and a 1tb hdd for e529

is that a decent deal? I saw a 4thgen i3 4005u with 4gb ram and 500gb hdd for e379 too, what do you think of that?

I'm ridiculously out of the spec loop.

I kind of avoid Dell and HP laptops. Did you consider bidding for an item? You can bid at the last minute in Ebay the highest you are willing to pay. Also use Parcel motel if buying from UK since postage will be cheaper.

for the dell do you know what i5 it is? Normally the "U" (3317u) at the end uses less power than the "M" (3210m).

If 529 is within your budget then that is a decent price for the latest i5 with 8gb ram and 1tb hard drive, just update the hard drive to a SSD in the future ;)

the i5 is a i5-5200u i think. it's actually down to 499 from today until the 23rd so i might go for it to be honest, the i3 is down to 349 though, is it worth going an extra 150 for the extra ram and cpu speed when it will mostly just be used for office work and browsing and the odd game of cs-go

yes, the i5 has turbo boost which the i3 does not have. (major advantage)

from 2.2ghz your processor can reach up to 2.7ghz but normally you will only need it when multi tasking and if your computer demands more on your CPU.

Please note the turbo frequency will only activate when the machine is plugged in.

But for 500eu i would say it's the right price.

Do you have a link for this laptop?

i can't post a link on it but

    -go to dell .ie
    -click home
    -select inspiron 15 3000 (DVD)

and you'll see the special offer there of 499 at the very right

The reviews on the Dell website are not all that great. The specs do look good for that price.

Could you give us a feedback about the laptop once you get it?

    Cheers!
