Inspired by the thread on funny place names, is it a coincidence that tralee and Galway rearrange the letters to not sound rude. GMIT and the epic ITT specifically

    It never stopped Springfield heights

Because Tallaght institute of technology would be T.I.T

GMIT was the RTC before it changed names.

Get an old skool taximan in Galway and ask for GMIT and he'll call it the RTC

Mayo as they have a campus in Castlebar

    Whatcha on about OP? :)

Are Tallaght and Tralee both ITT?

LIT in Limerick was an RTC and before that a CoACT.

I think you're making up the ITT one.

Why?! It clearly says I.T. Tralee? Should say T.I.T., but doesn't. My eldest hoping to go to TIT next year....perhaps the name factored into his college choices now I think about it...

    GIT!

Before they stuck the M in.

    Very English saying. Think Delboy.

With IT Tallaghts current desperate "I did it *wink*" innuendo ad campaign, I don't see why they don't just rename to TIT

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭Rumple Fugly

    Sligo Higher Institute of Technology

Dundalk IT abbreviation is DKIT. What does the K stand for. Or the Y in LYIT? Using this system Tralee could be TEIT.

Oh right. See what you mean now - yeah, they could have just called it T.R.I.T. or something.

If it ever extended to cover Clare & Limerick it might have to be a girls only college as fellas mightn't be able to find it. ;)

Edit: @Un Croissant. Great minds and in exactly the same minute too!!

OK, so you're alluding to a time in folklore where it "should" have been called GIT but wasn't?

If they're that sensitive GTI would seem to not be ground breaking.

NUIM changed their name for no good reason I can tell but they really did have to change the name of the
DIPloma in Software, Hardware & IT.

    Is git a rude word?

Tralee was an RTC too. They had a temporary sign with TraLee institute of technology on the front of the campus for a few months after the changeover.. They soon realised the unintentional comedic value and rearranged to ITT

I remember a similar conversation not long after the DART began operating in Dublin.

Ould wans in shops asking each other if it was built in Cork would they call it the CART?

And what if they built it in Fermanagh?

Oh how they laughed themselves silly at that one before saying 'oh lord help us,'

I think I was about five at the time.

    No.

But who wants to hang a framed diploma on the wall with the letters G I T spelled out in large capital letters above their name?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,832 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

DART stands for Dublin Area Rapid Transit. Growing up I always hoped Fermanagh would get their own version

UCG supposedly became NUIG.......but I know a few guys working there who still call it UCG. Hard enough to change these habits.
