Putting french doors where an existing window is

The back wall of our kitchen has a large window at one end and the back door leading out into the garden at the other end. I want to fit a new kitchen and it would make a lot more sense spatially if I could block up the back door and put the new kitchen units along that part of the wall and turn the existing large window into french doors. Is this as straightforward as it sounds or are there other things I would have to take into considweration? How much is a job like this likely to cost?

It's a fairly straightforward job to do. The key issue is how wide is the Window that's coming out. The window will have a concrete head over it which holds up the Wall over the Window. If it's wide enough then it means that the window can be just knocked out, the new French Doors fitted and the Wall can be made up to suit.
If the Window is not wide enough then I'm afraid it's a much bigger job and one for someone with the necessary experience. Basically the Wall has to be supported while the old head is removed. The ope widened and a new Head fitted into place. Then the French Door can be fitted and the wall made up and finished to match the rest of the House.
You're window would need to be around 7 ft or Bigger for it to be suitable to just remove the Window.

I've recently done this and my window was not very wide. I got a door made and it's one normal door in width and the other door is very narrow, half width. It looks very well.

If your keeping the same width its not a big job, it's when you increase size you'll need new lintels or steel. Last one we did was only 1.6m wide and looks well in the small room. If you are not widening budget 6/700 for fitting and average size door (say 1.8x2m) can be anything from 900-1500 depending on company you use

Can the existing back door simply be bricked up then?

Yes, Remove Door an Frame. Brake away the reveal and block it up. Then plaster and finish to match the house.
