Choice of SUV

Hi all, have a choice of company car from following

Ford Kuga zetec 2.0TDI
Kia sportage 1.7D
Nissan quashqai
Hyundai Ix 35
VW tiguan 2.0TDI 110bhp
Mazda cx5
Toyota Rav4

Any opinions? Kind of leaning towards the Tiguan or Kuga.

Will be doing a decent amount of driving , and have 1 kid in family as well.

I'd go with the Mazda CX5 myself. While there are still question marks over the long term reliability of Mazda Skyactive diesel engine, you don't have to worry about that side of it. It drives really well and is almost petrol like in character.

Like The Tiguan, but boot size seems hardly bigger than a golf which i was suprised with.
Must look into the mazda more, hadn't really considered it to be fair.
Would the 110bhp be considered ok in the 2.0 Tiguan engine?
I amn't really into cars so its a bit foreign to me!

VW Tiguan is old at this stage, hasn't really changed all that much since 2008.

I really like the new Kugas but they are not so good economy wise. I would have the CX5 its different and there is not too many of them about. The Sportage is a good car too do and does has good mpg figures.They are everywhere do just like the Quashqui. I know someone who has one and they are getting better mpg figures from the Sportage than they did from the 1.6tdi CMax that they had before it. The Tiguan is a real school run mammys car.

Having driven them all, its got to be the Mazda.

For some reason the CX5 doesn't suffer with engine issues like the 6, so there's very little reason not to recommend it.

Interior isn't quite as good as European alternatives, but apart from that it's superior in most other areas.

Facelift model due any time now too with better radio, but might be going up in price a bit.

Drove the VW,Hyundai , Mazda and Ford Kuga today.

Kuga and Mazda in the lead so far, very impressed in particular with the CX5, lovely looking car and a nice drive.

Surely the Qashqai is only half the price of the others?

Let's have a look:

Kuga €29,995 - €46,855
CX5 €28,945 - €40,945
Qashquai - €24,495 - €34,995

OK, not half, but thousands cheaper. Not in the same class.

The X-Trail is more of a rival to the others listed. The Qashqai is a bit smaller.

The standard of the new Kia Sportage is much improved compared to the old.
My father is changing his jeep, and he's stuck between choosing the Kuga, Sportage & Qashqai.

We found that the Qashqai engine isnt powerful enough, as it is only a 1.5 diesel..
The Kuga was okay, but the Sportage had everything he was looking for. The styling inside and out is great and the engine is economical.

I would definitely recommend the Sportage.

There is a new Hyundai Tucson launched in the summer which will replace the ix35. There is also a new Sportage to be launched early next year.

Base qashqai is 1.2 petrol, spec a 2.0 diesel and it's a pricey as the rest.

There's no longer a 2.0 dci unit available, only a 1.5dci and 1.6dci.
The 1.6dci range topper SVE 4x4 is 34k, good value I tnink.

The Qashquai is in the same segment as the rest, which is the C-SUV range

The x-trail is now the replacement for the Qashquai+2

If you consult the list prices in the bit of my post that you just quoted, you will see that the top CX5 is €6K more than the top Qashqai, while the dearest Kuga is €12K more.

Where are you getting your prices from?

I just went onto Ford.ie and Maxda.ie and the rande topping Kuga 2.0tdci Titanium is 34k and the Cx5 range topping Platinum 2.2d manual is 35k.

The prices quoted are a way off even with delivery costs and metallic paint.

My apologies, I got those prices from carzone.ie, to save going to 3 different sites.

In fairness, the Ford website quotes €41K for the 5-door Titanium 2.0 TDCI Diesel 150 Euro 6 140 PowerShift 4WD, not €34K.

...and that doesn't include leather or metallic, adding €3K.

And a 175HP metallic CX-5 is €39,870 per Mazda's site, so both cheaper than Carzone says, but dearer than you think.

I have the CX5 6 months now and love it. Really comfortable and handles really well. Plenty of poke, great pick up. I test drove the Rav and the Quashqai and they weren't a patch on the Mazda.

Lad was telling me that its vw group that put the engines in the sportage .truth or bull****.either way i have noticed a good few 151 sportage around

It's bull. Kia and Hyundai being sister companies build their own engines.

Thanks all for the replys, very helpful forum.
Think im going to go with the Mazda Cx5.

They through a curveball at me at last minute, giving me the option of a few 5dr saloons also, Insignia/Passat/Mazda 6/Octavia/Avenis also.

I like the passat but its the 1.6TDi version and i believe there a bit sluggish at that engine size.

Given the choice, I would choose the 5 door saloon over the SUV alternative any day, i.e Mazda 6 over CX5, Passat over Tiguan, Mondeo over Kuga. Generally they will be better specced at similar price levels, be slightly better on fuel and will definitely be a nicer drive. SUVs tend to just be an overpriced alternative. Unless you like the higher driving position or need an estate car for carrying certain items. In that case there is always the estate alternative......I am thinking of changing my 5 series to an estate but it will be the 5 series estate (tourer) I go for rather than X3 or X5 for the reasons above. Nice range of options you have though, there will be something in there you like

ya i agree to a certain extent and would have been of the same mind set myself.
I took both the CX5 and the Mazda6 for a drive and was very impressed with how the CX5 handled and drove, didnt find a lot in it to be honest.

i do also like the the driving position though.
