So like many others on AH I'm sure, I'm a fan of the International Brigades and their role in the Spanish Civil War. Basically they were units composed of volunteers from all over the world, fighting against fascism.

I say it's time to re-assemble the international brigades and mobilise the left in the West, we have to go and fight ISIS. The pose a clear danger to the people and we as defenders of the worker, have to now fight in northern Iraq and Syria.

So what say you AH, are you up for it? Any advice?

Will you join the International Brigades? 13 votes

Would this brigade be pro-public transport or pro-new bypass?

Pretty sure you missed the memo on all Galway city threads being based on public transport, cycling, traffic or roads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,329 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

True. We haven't had a food thread in a while.

Ah yes, I can see it now. We're all going to get on our bikes, scooters & God forbid the odd car etc.. & head east en masse across the Quincenteniall. That'll sort them out - when we get there

These international brigades could be a stabilizing force in the middle east with their crusade against extremism..

You must have missed the historical memo which noted that the Irish brigade that went to fight in Spain was an absolute disgrace behavior and performance wise and was disbanded without having contributed anything.

That was the fascists under O'Duffy. The International Brigadiers who fought for the people's government did so with distinction.

That was the blueshirts who were fighting for Franco; the volunteers in the International brigades, the Connolly column, took heavy loses fighting for the republic.

The type of person now that would join these type of things would be Anti-American types. The only type of brigade they would join would be the Al Aqsa Brigade

Before we head over we'll need sunblock (lot of it), guns'n'stuff and pamphlets outlining where we lie on the political spectrum. I'll be damned if I have to head into battle with hardened ISIS troops without a proper selection of leftist literature.

I Think that daesh may already have the foreign fighters market in their corner, not that I wouldn't disagree with a load of communists and anarchists being slaughtered far away (I'm a Franco-esque type anyway),I would be more afraid of the perfidious knuckleheads joining daesh as some Anti-west thing.

I propose we call the Irish volunteers the "Dr Noel Browne Column."

Seriously, how did the lads (in both sides) get away with it legally here at the time when irish volunteers were going to both sides in the Spanish Civil War? I remember seeing a 'in history' bit in the local paper with stories in the paper in the 30s. One describes a big ship out in Galway Bay taking boatlots of lads, it had a huge swastika flying from it!

There already are something like international brigades involved in that conflict since thousands of European Muslims have flocked to the Middle East to participate in the enslavement, rape, torture and murder of anyone who happens to be different.
