What the hell is this? Timid Toad and some fella in a shiny coat telling a story?

    TOTP was odd sometimes.

This is without a doubt the weirdest TOTP I've ever seen.

Elvis Costello & Hank Marvin I recognise.

Of the rest, Legs and Co dancing the Wacko Jacko was the least bizarre. Think about that.

    Hank Marvin is doing disco.

    Strange goings on.

    Yeah, that was very strange.

Imagine being in the studio audience, hoping to see The Police or Gary Numan and then that chancer comes on. And he just went on and on telling the same story forever.

Did he get lost going to the Jackanory studio?

This is on Youtube but it looks like he was on at least once more.

    Strange days indeed.

Yeah, looking forward to Friday Night. Should be a cracker. Everything is New!

    7.30pm & 3am Sounds of The Sixties
Hip to the Trip Celebration of the decade's psychedelic music, featuring counter-culture classics by the Who, Pink Floyd, Joe Cocker, the Nice and the Jimi Hendrix Experience

    8pm Being James Galway
A portrait of the renowned flautist, charting his humble beginnings with a Belfast flute band and rise in the classical music world. The musician speaks candidly about his life and career, during which he has sold more than 30 million albums and, at the age of 75, continues to tour the world and give masterclasses. The documentary includes footage of the flautist backstage in rehearsals and during performances, as well as at his home in Switzerland. Featuring contributions by Melvyn Bragg, Riverdance composer Bill Whelan and the conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Leonard Slatkin. Narrated by Jeremy Irons. Previously shown on BBC1 Northern Ireland

And then the real action begins ...

9pm & Midnight The Irish Rock Story: A Tale of Two Cities
Documentary telling the story of how rock music helped bring about change for Ireland over 40 years, and how the sounds that emerged were grounded in the musical traditions of Ireland's two main cities. From the pioneering touring showbands of the late fifties through to the modern day, the film examines how the harder sounds of Belfast merged with the more folk-centric traditions of Dublin, and celebrates some of the key musicians to have emerged from the Irish scene, and how they were influenced by the political, social and cultural climate of their surroundings. Featuring contributions from U2, Sinead O'Connor and Bob Geldof

10pm & 1am Irish Rock at the BBC
A compilation of Irish rock performances from the early seventies to the present day, with acts including Thin Lizzy, Ash, the Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, U2, Sinead O'Connor, the Pogues, Imelda May, Cavan, Hozier and the Divine Comedy. The programme features clips from a variety of BBC shows, including the Old Grey Whistle Test, Top of the Pops, and Later... with Jools Holland

11pm & 2am The Strypes: Best Thing Since Cavan
Julien Temple's portrait of the Irish rock group, charting their evolution from four close childhood friends making music together to becoming a critical and commercial success story, credited with bringing R&B and rock 'n' roll to a new generation of fans. Drawing parallels with the career trajectories of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Kinks, the film examines how the Co Cavan natives formed their own distinctive, hard-edged sound

The Irish Rock Story is also on RTE One next Thursday at 10.15pm. Shame it's only an hour long. There are lots on repeats on Friday and Saturday Night if you miss them.

BBC NI (who are mainly responsible for these shows) have a new site for all their music coverage here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/pq1td1Z3fkY0Vm2Wt7Z5NQ/bbc-music-ni

Before that , Top of the Pops 1980 is on tonight at 7.30pm and Midnight. Peter Powell introduces "Shakin' Stevens, Blondie, the Beat, the Buggles, the Tourists, Fern Kinney, Cliff Richard, the Ramones, Iron Maiden and Kenny Rogers" Sadly, not all on stage at the same time.

Hope you enjoy some of those programmes, great to see a bit of Irish Music on Four.

    Oh, sorry...

    G'wan Rory!

Nice lil' bit of exposure for those young pups The Strypes later on.

Slash has always been an advocate on the awesomeness of Rory.

Must be a nightmare trying to shoehorn everything into an hour ... Dublin or Belfast music alone would easily fill a six part series.

    Philo :)

''Is there anybody here with any Irish in them? Is there any of the girls who'd like a little more Irish in them?''

Ripping up the John Travolta picture when he knocked him off Number One ...

Well played, Bob. Lovin' your work.

The Boomtown Rats' music videos were absolutely shocking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

Small bit too much of the "misery breeds great music" narrrative going on.

Just celebrate the songs and have less Joseph O'Connor.

God we had some great Irish rocker bands back then.

    Dearg Doom :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

I have to confess that I can't hear Dearg Doom without hearing Jack Charlton dubbing over it.

Great song though (as was the World Cup version).

Great songs obviously, but it's a case of the same oul' same oul.

Surely Auntie Beeb can find a few leftfield acts - Hothouse Flowers, Frank and Walters, Sultans Of Ping
