That moment where someone asks you if you have something random & food prep related (in this case, something that could be used to hold dough together in an oven) and you're like 'No, I can't remember buying anything like thaaaa....' and then you remember who you are and go get your ridiculous stash of, mainly unused, food items

Only 3 types of skewer? Amateur.

Then it's to the butcher's with me!

Going to see which is tastier - shin or tail.
I find that tail has a more 'unique' flavour, probably due to the amount of connective tissue & cartilage. But each cut has its place & I love both.

Was going to post this in the Dinner thread (where someone is using it) but thought here might be better.....

Coconut oil. Is it good or bad for you? I bought some last month but then read a wiki report on how bad it is so haven't used it since.

    Can anyone enlighten me please.

It's the best type of oil for you out there. That and extra virgin olive oil. They are good fats.

I agree. Coconut oil is really worth a bit more googling as it's wonderful for cooking and baking but it's good for so much more. Put it on a cut or scrape and halve the healing time, for example.

    Quoting Wikipedia....
Coconut oil or Copra oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry. Because of its high saturated fat content it is slow to oxidize and, thus, resistant to rancidification, lasting up to two years without spoiling.[1]

Many health organizations advise against the consumption of high amounts of coconut oil due to its high levels of saturated fat

I read a lot of contradicting articles on coconut oil consumption. At the end of it I've come to believe that it is good for you as the ones produced these days are not as highly processed as the ones used 30 years ago, none of that trans fat etc.

Is coconut oil really all it's cracked up to be?

They are super excellent moisturisers, if you're still iffy about using it, rather than letting it go to waste. Great hair conditioner too.

I may be wrong but I don't think people use coconut oil as much as they'd use olive oil/butter. I still have 1/3 of 250ml raw coconut oil left after 3 weeks, compared to going through almost a pound of butter each week.

Is there any information on what's considered "high amounts"?

    That's the key IMO.

I like coconut oil. But I just added it into my cooking routine rather than switch completely to it. So now I use butter sometimes, veg or olive oil sometimes, and coconut oil sometimes, I can't see anything potentially harmful in that.

Google says 86g sat fat /100g coconut oil. 51g sat fat / 100g butter. Butter has more cholesterol.

Mrs Billy uses it as a moisturiser. What she probably doesn't know is that I nick hers if I'm making a Thai curry & I've none left in the kitchen. :p

Tell her to stick it in her hair, it's an awesome hair mask :)

She uses Moroccan Oil for that.

Top Tip: Moroccan Oil does not work in a Tagine as Coconut Oil does in a Thai curry. :pac:

Just after buying some yummy chocolate from Eve's chocolatiers in Dennehys Cross (treated myself and bought little gifts for my friends :pac:) - have to wait till Easter though :(

I have a plan to bake Donal Skehans Chocolate Guinness cake and blueberry chia seed muffins this weekend, as well as the now famous protein bars from the nutrition forum :D

There are good fats and bad fats. With regards to olive and coconut oil; if they are cold pressed and no chemicals added during processing (i.e. virgin/extra virgin), they're fine. Rule of thumbs is that if the coconut oil is solid at room temperature, its good. If it's in a bottle, don't use.

Also, the jury has been out for a while about whether or not high levels of saturated fat is bad for you. Nutrition is not an exact science, but I'm inclined to believe it's fine as long as your not downing bottles of the stuff every day.

Out for brunch this morning, and my dish came with sous vide eggs. Oh my god, what a revelation! I've spoken often about my aversion to the texture of egg whites, but these were great! The texture was smooth and velvety, and the cooking method took the slimy, rubbery texture away completely. I couldn't tell if I was eating yolk or white. Highly recommended!

Made blueberry and chia seed muffins tonight - they taste pretty good and are healthy enough!

Did the annual replanting of my herb garden yesterday! Some of my herbs are hardy annuals like rosemary and sage but others need to be replaced. I planted 2 x parsley, 2 x coriander and 2 x thyme. My chives (planted last year) are sprouting too. The raised beds are next. Last year I had good results with peas, but the carrots weren't worth the hassle. Might try spuds this year.

    Happy Spring !!

Preferably without beans or eggs :)

So many, the Easy Peasy Recipes thread would be a great place to start looking or The Cooking Club which has 4 full years of awesome recipes.

Quick, easy, cheap & healthy are all fairly subjective (what I think is quick and healthy might be scary for someone who doesn't like cooking & is on Weightwatchers etc.) so it'd be a good idea to have a browse of some recipes on the forum and see what might fit in with what you're after

Just spent 2 hours putting together a new bbq. I had to take it apart twice as the first time there was a piece missing and the second time the instructions were wrong ;):o After finally getting it together I realised that I have the wrong gas bottle...different connection. Peaved! On a positive note my raised beds are all de weeded and ready for planting. Going to wet the shamrock tonight too so all's not lost!
