Are any apps like Uber popular in Ireland yet?

Ubers basically an app where anyone can be a taxi and I've heard from people in america about some funny experiences with drivers and how it seems better than a normal business taxi.

Has anyone here tried it or something like it yet and have positive feedback? And was it cheaper than actual taxis?

    You'll need a license,insurance and a DOE test first.

The liability / insurance implications of 'hiring' yourself out as a taxi would be potentially crippling.

    I wouldn't recommend it .,,

Probably should've clarified, not looking to drive, I'm looking to get drives and want to hear if it's usable in Ireland yet

    It's illegal without a license.

Uber, and their ilk, are the snake oil of the 21st century. Money hoovering middlemen who will be nowhere to be seen when it all ends in tears.

They are only allowed work with licenced SPSVs in Ireland, so far, so can't use their trademarks of price gouging and uninsured and unregulated drivers here just yet. They are being fcuked out of towns, cities, and counties around the world by the truckload though, so I'd say they are a fad that will go the way of zeppelins and hovercraft.

They are valued at over $41bn dollars. Won't disappear any time soon.

I'd give them five years, tops.

Why? Because you don't like them as a company?

Great idea. Mate of mine was doing this for years back in our college days, long before smartphones and apps. Just park up next a chippy of a night out roll down the window and shout "here boss fiver a lift a home" made decent money from it and had great craic.

She had big tits too. That helped. :pac:

I assume the Revenue and her insurance company also thought it was mighty craic? And her clients would have laughed all the way to the operating theatre if she had an accident?

I've used it a few times (Rome) it isn't much cheaper than a cab, you make a bit of a saving if you call them from your home. Normal cabs turn on the meter once they receive your call and leave the rank.

But if I was leaving a bar or something I would just flag down a cab.

The uber cars are all quite flash though.

I used uber many times while in America and its not as good as it's made out to be. For starters there's no cash it's paid by card nor is the a meter so you have no idea how much you're being charged until after the ride when you receive a text. I also didn't find it cheaper then getting a taxi.
