So I have watched a few bits and pieces of the Oscars. But watching Arquette's rant on equal pay for women and then Streep and Lopez go nuts I nearly p1ssed my pants!

Anyone else think this is just a big f##king joke?

Maybe the super wealthy feel the need to take up a cause to justifiy their extortionate wealth.

My exceptance speech would have been.

"F##k you Arquette, f##k you Streep and f##k you (don't look me in the eyes) Lopez......... Oh and f##k you too Oprah, you are full of sh1t also!"

Just because they've made money they're not entitled to voice their opinion?

The oscars- great day for those involved in the entertainment business to slap themselves on the back and stroke each others egos.

Pity there is not as big an awards ceremony for people who actually do some good in the world.

It's one of the reasons why I can't watch award shows.

You earn millions just for pretending to be someone else. Why do you think I want to hear your political opinions?

Even if the message is one I agree with, the whole thing is just too wanky.

I think she was right, didnt Charlize Theron manage to increase her wage to match that of Chris Hemsworth in their latest move once she found out through the sony hack?

If someone is rich so what, they worked hard to get there. Fair play to her I say.

Because that would be boring. And hollywood doesn't like boring.

They live in their own little bubble, totally disconnected and out of touch with reality and it's facts. Just like many third wave feminists, actually, so it's no surprise seeing celebrities and actresses buying into their misrepresented statistics. When I watched it I could just imagine the countless screams of "you go girl!" amongst the applause.

She did not deserve that award, by the way.

i was going to mention that. Even the super wealthy film stars are affected by this.

I think fair play to her. I enjoyed her speech more than the typical 'thank you God, thanks mum and dad' dribble.

She had a point to make and made it at the place guaranteed to gain the maximum possible attention.

Whether you agree with her or not, you can't say it wasn't effective.

    This thread wouldn't exist otherwise.

This is not the place to discuss your bladder problems and if those women used their profiles to highlight an issue then I'm fairly sure they couldn't give two f##ks what you think.

I disagree that they work "hard" to get there.
We live in a society where people are rewarded more not by how hard they work, but by how much they can lie, cheat and steel, they are rewarded by how popular they can make themselves or how good they look, they are rewarded by how they can manipulate the system.

It's just as bad for women who earn less.

During the state of the union Obama mentioned that something had to be done to change this. The democrats all applauded. The Republicans stood then and looked like someone had just pissed on them.

You have a talent for stating the abvious!

However three women with a net combined wealth of close to half a billion banging on about equal pay I find hilarious...
Why not just shorten it to equal pay for all... Or better wages for the poor...

But I guess that might collide with how they want to lives their lives.

I just watched the clip (fuck that Oscars bullshit) and it seemed perfectly clear to me she was talking about equal pay in a general sense:
It's our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in America

Even if it had been solely about women, what's the problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭WoolyJumper

It's not like she was up there whining about why she didn't get paid as much as Ethan Hawk, she used her position and her award to highlight the fact that women in all levels of society get paid less than men. Good for her. Meryl streep was fist pumping the air because she does a lot of work around womens rights. She is not a media hungry celeb so you don't hear about it very often.

Watch it again! Or maybe you are better suited to watching Peppa Pig as I can now add "Missing the point" to "Stating the obvious".

So you have to be poor now to speak out about economic injustice, is that it?

No, but if you are getting paid 15 million a movie and pay your nanny minium wage you are complicit in that injustice!

Trying to take the moral high ground in some side issue is laughable.

What part of what she said is it you have the problem with?

The simple fact of the matter is that in the USA, there's no legislation (at least on a federal level) mandating equal pay for women and men. Women are at the mercy of their employer if they want equal pay to their male colleagues working at the same job, so if their employer is an Ayn Rand-reading selfish prick, they're shit out of luck.

Didn't someone else on here have a problem with a speech that Emma Watson gave? I think it was about gender equality as well.

    Strange coincidence eh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,923 ✭✭✭Playboy

In the entertainment industry it has fck all to do with gender and everything to do with box office draw. The people who draw the biggest audiences get paid the most regardless of gender. Plenty of talented actors out there who dont get paid as much as Tom Cruise or Sandra bullock.

I wouldnt have minded the speech so much if it was for the benefit of people who are actually disadvantaged by unequal pay in certain industries or in some of the lower paid jobs on movie sets but it was clear in her interviews after the ceremony that she was concerned about her own pay.
