Letting on to their friends and families out marching in the sleet and rain they're being martyrs for the cause and all along they're in there getting three square meals a day, sky sports and a warm bed.

    Canny Fückers :D.

Never to trust an unnamed source??

Not unnamed actually. One appeared as I said on RTE radio earlier today adamant that he didn't think there was any hunger strike on. This despite the girlfriend of one of the prisoners saying there was. It kinda all unravelled from there.

The public sector is inefficient and wasteful, our taxes are being wasted.

    Name a country it isn't?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,286 ✭✭✭✭Geuze

We already do. I'm not paying twice simple as that.

Nobody has, or will "pay twice" for water.

It costs approx 1.2 bn to run the 1000+ water and wastewater treatment plants.

We have only paid that once in each past year.

And, in the future, we'll only pay that once, i.e. we'll pay 1.2bn, not 2.4bn.

What is changing, is that instead of us borrowing plus using taxes to pay the 1.2 bn, we will now finance it with taxes + direct charges.

The country, as a whole, doesn't pay enough tax to pay for everything. That's why we borrow millions every day just to keep the lights on. People bitched when the government cut services and they birch when they try to raise revenue but the simple reality is that a combination of the two is necessary.

    This is the painful reality.

We collect less tax than we spend on public services plus welfare.

I'd love to tell you there's an easier way out than tax increases and public spending cuts.

Not having to pay interest on the banking debts that we took on would help, yes, but we'd still have to run a tight budget.

Apparently the protesters said today just wasn't the right day to start the hunger strike, but said it would definitely go ahead tomorrow or the next day.

They can't be expected to go on a hunger strike on Mexican Monday in Prison. They may give it a go for Waffles Wednesday.

Apologies. A quick look on the google machine confirms you are correct. I'd always assumed as it was a principality that it wasn't an actual country in its own right.

Can we keep discussion of Irish Water/water charges and everything that goes with them to the dedicated mega thread in Politics Cafe please?

Bare in mind, it's a different forum, so different charter applies.

They are a micro country and rely on France for defence.
