    Welcome to the NHK.

A mate gave me the DVD boxset of that last week to watch. It's brilliant!

Most of my favourite anime is the early Manga entertainment cyberpunk stuff that would have been released on VHS from the early to mid 90s. I wouldn't be nearly as into the more modern stuff, it's a bit too clean.

There really was something special about being a kid and browsing shelves of VHS tapes containing super violent animation.

Eh, normally I get a bit of flack for saying this, but I really didn't like a lot of those. There were masterpieces like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor 2 was incredible, but then a lot of the other stuff was just terrible and the only thing they had going for them was the hyperviolence. I actually watched Wicked City again recently enough, and my god that was terrible!

I do get the nostalgia, because that was when I first got into anime, renting out these crazy movies with friends and your parents not being any the wiser because "they're cartoons like!" and I'm sure I still have an old VHS copy of Ghost in the Shell kicking around at the parents' place. But a lot of times Manga Entertainment would just release any old sh*te regardless of quality as long as it was hyperviolent nonsense, case in point 'Violence Jack' which was an utter turd.

I usually watch them with my OH. I bought her most of them last year for X-Mass as a present.

I left out Pom Poko, Meet the Yamadas, Tales from Earthsea and I think 1 other film due to general feedback on their quality.

Noooo! Don't leave out Pom Poko, it's awesome! In fact, I think it's probably the most underrated Ghibli movie. The Yamadas, well it's good but it's a very different type of movie entirely, worth a look. But seriously, Pom Poko is all kinds of fantastic.

    - Wolf's Rain
    - Full Metal Alchemist
    - Death Note
    - Elfen Lied
    - Neon Genesis Evangelion
    - Attack on Titan
    - many more that I can't think of right now...

    .

It's complete and utter nostalgia for me I'm afraid. I went through the usual teenage boy 'everything must be violent!' phase so it was right up my street at the time :D - some of it is indeed muck. Violence Jack is ridiculous.

But yeah, there really were some masterpieces too. Akira is an obvious one, but I really do think Urotsukidoji is a misunderstood gem. (I get a lot of flack for that one as you can imagine :!)

I have quite enjoyed some more modern series. Elfen Lied was just spectacular. My sister has recently convinced me to start watching Deathnote (Which I'm loving). I think my main issue with more modern series is how hyper-stylized a lot of them got as they went on. I prefer them a bit grittier (and cel animated)

Death Note remains my favourite. Best series I've seen for two people trying to out smart each other. The Manga was good too and fleshed out some plot threads.

Code Geas: Lelouch of the Rebellion
    Attack on Titan
    Fullmetal Alchemist

Did not care for Elfen Lied, a lot due I think to the terrible dub.

Of those up on Netflix, are any worth catching such as Psycho Pass?

I can get the nostalgia alright, and I guess I can understand issues about style, because there's a lot of studios now that'll blend CGI. Some of it can look amazing, some of it shoddy.

Death Note is just so fantastic :D

Have you seen Redline? Because I think that might be right up your alley, they made a big thing about it being completely cel animated.

I hear nothing but great things about Psycho Pass, really meant to be amazing, picked up the series on Bluray but still didn't get around to watching it myself, just have to finish watching Ergo Proxy and I'll get onto it. ;)

Just looks like crappy cartoons. Is it because it's Japanese that it's cool, fashionable or ironic?

Anime is essentially just Japanese animation, so there's a huge variety of different types of films and series. It would be wrong to think of it as just one thing. Science-fiction and fantasy are the dominant genres, but you'll find everything from comedy and drama, to horror and psychological thrillers. Adult-orientated animation and comics are mainstream in Japan. It's normal there to tell a story in animation. You'll find them on prime time television right after the nightly news. It's just another type of story-telling. The term 'anime' is seen by some in the West to apply to particular genres or styles, but in fact it applies to Japanese animation in its entirety.

Japanese animation developed independently of what was happening around the world, so, much like Japanese cinema, it has its own internal 'language' and stylistic ticks. The Japanese are just a very unique people, and their cinema and animation is like nothing else. That's part of the appeal. Some of it is certainly 'cool', but it's not particularly trendy or fashionable. It's simply unique storytelling, which appeals to certain types of people. Generally speaking, those people are anorak types who enjoy digging for new shows and films, i.e. fans in the fullest sense of the word.

For anyone interested, Studio Ghilbi is essentially the Disney of Japan. Their films have won multiple Oscars and are a staple of art-house cinemas all over the world. For example, Grave of the Fireflies is widely considered to be one of the greatest Word World 2 dramas ever produced, and that includes 'regular' films. Also, their fantasy films have to be seen to be believed, and they're a perfect example of what I mean when I say Japan developed independently of the rest of the world. Fantasy means something completely different when you're talking about anime.

    Full Metal Alchemist
Ghost In The Shell - SAC
    FLCL
Berserk - I just wish they had gone back and done more on this after the manga went ahead of it again

Death Note started off really well but then went up it's own ar*e.

    Spoilers!

Seriously though, Pom Poko is absolutely drenched in Japanese folklore and urban legends, and a lot of the time Japanese folklore can be downright utterly barmy. Part of the charm is that we get this incredible story that draws so heavily on actual mythology, and it is all sorts of wonderful.

    Death Note.

I'm currently Watching/Reading Attack on Titan. Its unreal.

I love Naruto too, watched loads of it, then just stopped, should really pick it up again.

Sword of the Stranger is a class movie too

It being animated should be irrelevant to the age demography... animation is just another form of medium to tell a story. There's a huge amount of animations directed at adults as American animation [Family Guy, South Park, Venture Brothers], Anime [Ghost in the Shell, Elfen Lied], or whatever.

I find it 'childish' that people still think that because it's animated that it's solely for kids... The immediate thing you probably think of when thinking of Animation is probably "He-man", "Scooby Doo", "TMNT", etc. which are obviously all directed at kids.

DBZ is absolute tripe... classic example of a complete reuse of the same story over, and over, and over, x50, again.

Strong guy comes along, get defeated at first... train to get stronger, defeat said strong guy while all screaming as though in severe constipation. Come next strong guy, get defeated... train to get stronger, have haemorrhoids sessions before defeating said next guy... rinse and repeat - add a few more characters that each do the same thing as the main + one racist stereotyped guy called Mr. PoPo.

How could anyone watch that... urgh.

    Yeah, pretty much.

Over here we're used to Pixar, Disney and other studios producing animation that 'adults can enjoy as well', i.e. with subtle references to sex, alcohol and gangster films. In Japan, many adults just like animation and they're catered for independently of children, rather than having the mature content they desire being carried on top of stories about lost zoo animals.

The Simpsons and Family Guy, while brilliant in their golden years, are far more immature than a lot of anime, yet anime fans are regularly thought of as childish. It seems to come down to humour. It's okay to laugh at a cartoon, no matter what age you are, but you mustn't take it seriously. True story: I once had a woman tell me that she was roaring crying at the end of Toy Story 3, but who laughed at me when I offered to loan her some Studio Ghilbi DVDs. Ignorance is bliss.

Film for Film Studio Ghibli trounce Disney/Pixar

Death Note is by far the best anime I ever watched.

I'd nearly watch it all again (just added to Irish Netflix), it was thrilling stuff.

Can anyone recommend something similar to it?

    Honourable mentions go to:
    Cowboy bebop
    Escaflowne

I agree, and in fact I alluded to this point earlier, but you'd have to concede that it's not comparing like with like. For example, Pixar cater for adults, but Ghilbi is often aimed directly at adults. That's quite a difference. They're two great studio though. Pixar look to be heading in the right direction again, after a few lacklustre sequels.

Sword of the Stranger is amazing! It's like a proper classic samurai movie, incredible fight scenes, and oh my god... that soundtrack! Seriously one of the most epic, stirring scores ever. I get chills just listening to it. If someone was wondering "what's this anime lark all about anyway?" you could just show them this and leave it that. Seriously amazing movie. :D

And Tobimaru! Oh my god Tobimaru was so awesome :D

The correct answer to this thread is One Piece. 682 episodes and still going strong.

Very difficult to recommend anything similar. I've heard Code Geass often recommended, but I've not yet watched it myself so I can't say.

But one show that might be worth a look is Monster. It's a bit of a slow burner, there's a lot of character building and it doesn't go at Death Note's tense 'plot twist every 5 minutes' pace. It's also a bit weighty at 74 episodes, but if you give it a chance it's an incredible show and seriously gripping, edge of your seat stuff.

Basically it's about a doctor who's supsected of murder and goes on the run from the authorities to find the real killer, and the plot just continues to thicken. ;)

The correct answer to this thread is One Piece. 682 episodes and still going strong.

This is why I'll probably never ever watch any of the "Big Three" Naruto/Bleach/One Piece or similar shows that just go on and on endlessly. Hell, Detective Conan is currently up the 760+ episodes isn't it? And how many movies? No freakin' chance of watching that. :pac:

Nah, one thing I love about anime is that shows are often self-contained stories, there's a very distinct plot set out from the start and they stick to it and wrap it up after that. So you'll often get shows that just feel like they've concluded perfectly.

    Cowboy Bebop
    Death Note
    Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    Steins;Gate
    Monster

And so very, very many more...
One show I've finished watching recently was From The New World (Shinsekai Yori) and oh my god, it's left me stunned. What an incredible storyline, dark as hell and the plot was just meticulous, then that ended... left me haunted, still thinking about it.
