I don't know what anime is.

Edit: Okay just googled it and its Japanese animation.

The only anime I'm aware of, or have any interest in, is the Daft Punk album 'Discovery' which has a feature length anime musical called 'Interstella 5555' as videos for the songs/tunes on that album.

I haven't watched much and a lot of the time I was going wtf? but I did enjoy Knights of Sidonia on Netflix. I've just started Psycho-Pass and that seems pretty good too.

Links234 is frustrated that people don't automatically know what Links234 is banging on about this particular time. Some might describe that as egocentrism.

Just looks like crappy cartoons. Is it because it's Japanese that it's cool, fashionable or ironic?

    Was a fan of

    Venus Wars,
    Cosmo Warrior zero
    Space battleship Yamato,
    Captain Harlock.

But I think that's all manga? Not sure what the diff is between manga and anime

Manga is comic books, anime is animation. ;)

Speaking of, have you seen they made a Captain Harlock movie?

    Samurai Champloo.

Death Note is up there too but it fell off a little in the second half of the series.

    death note.

watched the whole lot on youtube.

thats the only real animation series I could watch as an adult - minimum swashbuckle, zero tentacles and an intelligent plot.

(even if it does involved invisible flying demons with a fetish for apples)

Hactually come to think of it I loved this as a kid.

I believe it's an Americanised version of anime.

Does that make me a senior 'jipster'? :pac:

Essentially, in Japan, it's not automatically assumed that animation is just for children or just for comedy, so anime can be pretty much anything. You can have serious science fiction, romance and dramas, dark psychological thrillers, you name it. Even sometimes when they wouldn't have the budget for a live action movie, they'd just animate it instead. There's varying degrees of quality, and there's a lot of crap out there, but at the same time there's some incredibly good stuff. When it's good, it's really f*cking good. Anime has had quite an impact on mainstream movies, obviously on stuff like The Matrix, and director Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika) has had a profound impact on American moviemakers like Daren Aronofsky and Christopher Nolan. Hell, Black Swan practically is Perfect Blue.
