Speaks volumes about our patterns of play though if we're first for them. A few crossfield passes during a match is one thing. Coming first for them? It suggests that we're playing far too many long passes.

I managed to speak with Brian Cody recently at a seminar. Lovely man and an absolute legend as a manager.

One of the most important things he said that was needed for a successful team was having the fundamental structure right.

Statistics can be overused and sometimes don't tell an accurate story. Rightly or wrongly, it looks like LVG is focusing on his system/structure above everything which is sort of what Cody was saying. LVG team will succeed or fail based on his system which seems to be a trait shared by many top coaches.

Having the players on board is obviously important, but if this season was all about setting the groundwork for success, I think we could remarkable improvements in the team play as the system becomes more natural to the players.

Unfortunately, its horrible to watch united play and on paper there are at least 5 league games where united WILL drop points if they don't improve. But if we can scrap a top 4, I genuinely think we will see a different team playing next season.

That's my hope, consolidate this season and watch us fly next season. This season he's like a guy using a vice grip doing a job while waiting for some proper tools to arrive.

If the ball got stuck in his afro and he just walked into the goal, would that count or is it a foul?

Second in the possession stats and first in long ball stats.

I presume it is correct but that does seem very odd.

I'll bet they were never 2nd in possession or accuarcy.

Ugh why do I bother. Is anyone really bothered with them stats or is it just Bangkok

I keep coming back to the thought that, if United are sitting in third and rarely losing while playing an unimpressive brand of football, imagine what is going to happen when things click.

of course there are, there are teams dedicated to them at each team in the league, man utd invested heavily in their sports science department 10m last year iirc,

i was looking at stats today for the assists and what shocked me was that Falcao had the 2nd most assists in the team with 4 alongside rooney

Almost as if "long ball" wasn't synonymous with "hoof towards opposition goal".

Where are long ball stats ? Are you confusing them with non forward pass stats on that graph?

Considering City and Chelsea are 3rd and 4th, I wouldn't be that alarmed about this statistic.

I'd imagine next year is when we will see things click properly. Van Gaal with a full pre-season, players having being settled and getting the ideas into their heads. The new signings in full pre-season. No world cup hangover and then additional signings coming in.

At this stage of the game, unless something drastic happens, I don't see things changing in the forseable future. I'll imagine it will be grindy until the end of the season, maybe a flourish here or there.

But I'd hope come summer the club sets its stall out early getting rid of who it wants out, and getting in who they want early.

Wonder what our goals scored looks like this season. I get the immediate impression that the team hasn't been scoring many goals. Van Persie on 10 as our top scorer? That's low for a United team imo.

But there is probably plenty of goals chipped in from around the pitch?

and you forgot to add playing players in the correct positions.

You would think he was working with the Hull squad. There are issues to address but LVG does have plenty of good tools to use, if he can.

43 goals scored so pretty low, think it was about 65ish goals scored last year so would imagine it would get equaled with the remaining matches

The second picture has a break down of Utd stats only and then ranked. It has long balls as first in the league.

We've scored at least 3 times to rescue points in the last minutes. No sign of that last season

F.A warning for LvG comments, looks like no further action.
Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing on Wednesday, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been warned as to his future conduct after he was found to have breached FA Rules in relation to media comments.

The Reds boss denied that his comments which followed the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Cambridge United on 23 January 2015 alleged and/or implied bias on the part of the match referee, and/or brought the game into disrepute.

With a Real Madrid team that is very settled.
That has a manager in place 2 years.
With a team that won the champions league last season.
A club who keeps the squad fresh every season.
With possibly the biggest budget for transfers in the world. (taking in the financial fair play)

And some absolute whipping boys in the league. For all the huffing and buffing between La Liga and PL fans, while the odd mad result occurs in the premier league, you'd hardly go down to Burnley, Leicster QPR and expect to smack five past them week in week out.

Typically La Liga has a handful of whipping boys every season where top 4-6 teams everytime they meet

They are normally aimed passes to the wings, not the stereotypical lump to the huge Falcao or RvP, also the low percentage on forward passes can easily be attributed to the team so often being in the final third and playing the ball square or back, they often carry forward, lay off square or back.

    Stats are great though.
