If I were sufficiently rich not to need to work I think I'd go farming... until all the money was gone, then I'd go back to work.

I'd do another PhD in a related area that interest me, and work part time in the role I have now, but without the boring bits.

I can't imagine not working, I don't know how I'd fill my day. Some kind of work is needed to be a productive and functional member of society, paid or unpaid.

As others have said definitely sleep my "natural" cycle which would be bed around 3am or so and up around 12pm.

I'd mostly work on the farm at home as I love it, I'd expand and invest in it and probably buy more land around the area etc.

Might look into setting up some businesses that I didnt really do much in like buy a pub and have it managed but pop in and out of it keeping an eye on it etc, that sort of thing.

I'd also buy fast cars, every electronic gadget possible, massive house, heated pool, private jet etc etc.

Open as many pubs and nightclubs as I could and let the simpletons that frequent them hand me their money.

If i had enough money not to work, I'd study again. Nothing 'practical', just stuff that interested me and I'd also do some volunteer work.

It would be at a quite leisurely pace though as I have a decent capacity for doing nothing much as well.

I think mostly I'd volunteer. As I said on the "what would you do if you won the Lotto", I'd set up an animal charity, so that should keep me busy.

In my spare time - same stuff I do now in my spare time. Read, paint, cook, bake, swim, cycle, work in the garden.

As Mr von Bismark said, growing my own fruit and veg - and I have already found out that if I had more plum trees in the garden, I would be able to sell my plum and cinnamon jam, plum liqueur and plum chutneys with no problem at all. I've got half the office already offering to help me harvest this year, in exchange for some of these.

Do my PhD full time instead of part time.

Spend six months training to take a pro fight in MMA.

Learn one more European language and one major world language.

Live in Paris for a year.

A friend suggested this to me

(assuming I was single & in the same boat as you) id sleep until about 11am, have a long ****...really take my time & enjoy some porn for a change instead of blasting one out as quick as possible before the mrs get suspicious & comes to check on me. then id have breakfast with my pre, half an hour later head down the gym, take a PWO shake + a solid meal with me. after training id have my shake & some cereal in the changing room then head into the health suite for a sauna, steam & some aroma therapy while chatting to some foreign flange. id have a shower & sit down to my solid meal. (we're at about 4pm by now) head to the supermarket & id see what I fancy for tea...after much deliberation id walk out with 6cans of lager & phone a chinky. go home & tidy up a bit while I wait on my curry, probably have another **** too. watch some tv & drink my 6 cans with my curry. if im feeling upto it ill play the ps4 into the small hours....if not ill watch some porn & fall asleep pretty early. on days I don't train id stay in my boxers all day playing the ps4

If I had kids I think not working wouldn't be the end of the world as long as finances meant there weren't too many sacrifices. I guess you just find things t fill your time. Being a guy I would still like to be working on a part time basis at minimum though

If I didn't have to work I would work.

I of course do it to earn money as we need money to live, but I chose my specific career for the love of it and to make a difference in people's lives. Why would that change just because I no longer had to do it?

It would no doubt make life a lot easier though, and probably help me make what I do more accessible to more people, which would be amazing.

Do what I currently do; 'Work' 6 months of the year at the hobby I like (and which started off as a hobby), then spend the other 3 months 'working' at another one of my hobbies (again, always been a hobby of mine, but it's only starting to turn into a business this year), and travel for the other 3 months.

Fcuk, I need to get a 'real' job :(

If I woke up tomorrow, had the funds and had no responsibilities.

I'd buy a half decent camper van. Nothing special, just roadworthy and comfortable to sleep in.

I'd roam around Ireland for about 2 months experiencing all it has to offer and having the craic with randomers along the way.

I'd have pints in little nooks of character filled pubs at the foothills, get chips from seaside towns and sit and watch the sea. Eat all the blue ice cream I can find.

Stop by rivers and have a dip or fcuk around in a kayak, climb a few hills, bring the aul rothar and use it from time to time. Do aaaallll the touristy stuff. Caves, cliffs, museums, etc.

Then when all that bollox is done I'd pack a bag and head to the airport. Buy a ticket for the next available flight to anywhere and be gone.

I would walk for 4 hours every day. I would go on all the walks that I love and I would find more walks to love. And then I'd swim in the sea. And then I'd go sit in my outdoor hot tub and drink red wine. And I would only ever wear yoga pants and comfy cotton tops.

I'd guess you folk are mostly under 30?

Well take it from me, and oldie (50+) who took an early retirement package last year.

It is the best thing I ever did.

Duvet day in the cold weather, no commuting, no dealing with crap at work. Heaven.

I find the time flies. Even on quiet days. Love it completely, and would never go back to full time work evah!

I enjoy Dublin Local History, and get great enjoyment from being able to explore my own city as I have never been able to before. And a couple of other things that involve meeting my friends for a natter (who also took the package) no worries about the time.

Taking up French again with the Alliance. Gas altogether, no English spoken! Joining up with a meetup group to speak French with a native. Also daunting, but great.

Oh and I intend to visit every County in Ireland, some of them again, but some I have never been to. Challenge!

And check Ryr and AL for the cheapo flights every two or three months. Now where will I go next?

It's a laugh and very enjoyable.

But on the other hand, I like my own company, and can be at home all day and never get bored.

I honestly don't know how I ever worked full time for so many years. Shakes head.

Well, if enough money can be taken for granted in this dream world, I'd leave the house to the kids and go doing the grey-nomads thing around Australia. Mmm, lovely heat, driving and living in a decent bus, incredible landscapes....definitely would do that for a year or two. After that, no idea. Probably go back to work.

Start some businesses, travel, study and get ripped :D

Also take up a new random hobby every few months and keep the most enjoyable.

I think if you didn't need the money and could free yourself from work, that you could easily fill your day and I don't mean having mega millions in the bank

Here are some things I'd do.

Spend more time doing things with my wife and kid.
    Read
    Cycle
    Watch movies
    Go on day trips
    Learn a language
    Play golf
    Photography
    Take up other hobbies

I would probably do voluntary work just to keep myself busy.
I would take long holidays around the world when I wanted.
I would buy a 2nd home in an exotic location to go to when I felt like it.
I would take up a hobby but I'm not sure what yet

I hope you all don't think I am dominating the thread.

But honestly, doing nothing is great for a while too! After all, if you have given every bit of yourself for the company goal, it's time for you now!

When I took the package, I said I would do nothing for six months. And that's what I did, nothing, except rest, go on a holiday or two and see what life was like at home all day now and then.

    It was no problem.

I think sometimes there is a lot of pressure on those who have given up work to DO SOMETHING NOW, PLAN YOUR LIFE and so on. But it can be organic.

You will fall into things you always wanted to do, not because you HAVE to (to fill the time), but because you actually want to.

That, I think (from personal experience) is where many go a bit wrong. OMG I have so much time off, what will I do!!!

You need to wind down from a professional life, and go into "post professional mode" like I did, and enjoy the days resting, doing nothing, and planning!

TBH going halfway around the world on an eighteen hour flight to eat food I don't like and be hot and sweaty, and get needles in my arms for malaria and all the rest doesn't float my boat.

I can see it all on Google Earth, and uTube!

But Europe and my own country probably deserve a bit of my time now. Given that I have travelled everywhere I want to at this stage.

At the same time, I abolutely love reading all your dream times if you give up work. I might get some unintended inspiration!

Do all the travelling and the hobbies you wish, but.....

    Don't buy a second home.

Who will look after it when you are not there? Will the agent live in it, or give it to his mates when s/he knows you can't be there? Who would you rent it to? will they wreck the place. Too much already. Not worth it.

Rent in a place you want to go to, No hassles whatsoever.

Would you want to got to the same place all the time just because you own it?

How many holidays and trips would you get all around the world for the price of a second home?

I thought of doing it myself, but couldn't be ar$ed with the hassle of the maintenance and the concern. Rather be travelling elsewhere.

    Just a thought.

But follow your dream just the same, Each to their own and all that!
