Cavani has looked dangerous tonight, lets get him.

    Better hair than Falcao too.

Two yellows, can have no problem with either. Second one he takes down a man in a 3 v 3 situation, nowhere near the ball. First one was just a bad challenge.

He's a bit of a headcase but very good

    Would cost a bomb though

    The Van Gaal dossier

Great article here on LVG and his different spells at different clubs.

It talks about his formational evolutions and his sometimes frosty relationship with executives and players. Some nice graphs showing his various formations like his 3-1-2-1-3 at Ajax. Some personal stuff is covered too, the death of his first wife for example I wasn't aware of and how his strict upbringing is reflected in his management style.

Its got a good sense of humor

I assume its the same article that was making the rounds last summer/start of season?

Very good read for anyone who hasn't yet.

Last night was meh, Preston performed as expected, the pace we play at for the majority of games is so pedestrian, its not going to work, defenders have all the time in the world to get ready and make themselves solid, there is no runs from the midfielders supporting or making space for the strikers so they are living off scraps and dying a death out there while having to drop too deep to just get a touch of the ball now and then

Falcao is not playing well, but the service he gets is criminal, it is such a waste to have someone like him in the team and not be able to make the most of his talent, or at least play to his strengths a little if he is supposed to be the focal point of the attack! He needs to have support, to make space for him to work.

As usual we looked at our best when playing a system that was more orthodox and moved the ball quicker, not obsessed with keeping possession, Valencia must be the greatest trainer out there to be continually getting picked, can only assume Rafael is turning up to training pissed. The safety first approach is the only reason he is in the team but it is killing attacks 98% of the time when the ball goes near him.

Shaw needs to do more both offensively and defensively, some Evra like attempts to block balls in to the box and not enough attacking impetus at the other end, but he is still finding his feet I feel and doing an ok job.

Hererra needs to play, he may not be the best central midfielder in the world, but he is certainly imo the best at the club to make things tick and will link the play quickly and make the runs to give people options or to take defenders attention off the strikers who are too easy to mark when nobody else is threatening.

Di Maria is a mixed bag, as are most players of his ilk, I have no doubts about him though and his talent is there for all to see, his final ball has let him down recently but no doubt he will hit a purple patch again soon.

Blind didn't have a great game but he kept things ticking over and I don't have any major criticism of him really. Fellaini was the difference when he was put into a more destructive position, the stigma attached to him is amusing, he is good with his feet and much more then just a lump, he creates problems for defenders and is a fantastic plan B to have, plan A is clearly not going well right now.

Apologies for the length of the post, didn't mean to go on.

Oh, and are there actually people who would prefer to play pretty and not win anything?

They should consider possibly switching to being Arsenal fans, I couldn't give a flying **** how we win once we win when it comes down to it, whatever is working at a point in time is what works, use it. Nobody is happy with the style of play, not even the manager, but as a means to an end what is the issue other then spoilt baby syndrome?

Everybody wants to play beautiful sexy football all the time and win everything, sometimes you do have to be pragmatic.

I totally agree with you, but to give the benefit of the doubt, I suspect the people moaning about play style are doing so because they're concerned that poor play will turn into poor results sooner or later. And they may have a point.

That's a bit unfair all the same. United for years and years have had a tradition of playing a fast attacking brand of football. The way we've played this year isn't the 'United Way' for want of a better phrase and I've no problem with that this year because as you say, you have to be pragmatic and we need to get into the top four - simple as. And I've full faith in Van Gaal progressing next season with a couple of additions to the squad.

But I would struggle to watch us play like this for 3-4 years competing for a title. You can say 'go support Arsenal' all you want but I like to think what differentiates us as the team that I grew up and wanted to support is the style of play.

The United way is a load of clichéd bollox.

If we changed manager like every other club there wouldn't be such a thing.

It's like arsenal and thier walk it into the back of the net

No, it's not really bollox. We have a history of playing attractive football and producing quality players. Do you want United to just become another club? **** that. It's nothing to do with changing managers - go back through the coaches before Fergie and they all came in with the remit of trying to play attacking football .

And Arsenal only started playing the way they did under Wenger. Before that they were the boring, boring Arsenal under Graham, granted they were supposedly better a decade or so before that.

I want to see the quality of football improve, especially considering the squad we have, but I am more than happy to keep getting good results in the meantime waiting for that to happen. I don't think we've played attractive football though on anything near a consistent basis since 08-09, long before Fergie left. It's not just a problem attributed to this season or last IMO.

I was going to bring this up the other day but then I decided I didn't have the energy for the ensuing argument.

There were plenty of periods in the last 25 years were United weren't playing anything that could be described as attractive football unless you were feeling particularly generous.

    Just saw this via reddit

    https://twitter.com/FutbolFinn/status/567856767436234752/photo/1

Turns out they were playing in Bolivia at something like 4000ft above sea level, same pitch Di Maria needed an oxegen mask and Messi threw up on, mental.

    *cue jokes about fitness*

Really wish United had a youtube with stuff like that, City's one is class.

Also, De Gea is some man to spit.

We havent played consistent attacking attractive football for at least 6 years, and a couple of years before that we relied heavily on the ability of Ronaldo to destroy teams on the counter attack.

    What is unfair?

You have no problem with it this year, I agree.
You would like to see better football, I agree.

Van Gaal likes his teams to attack and play with flair, he is clearly not happy with how the team is playing right now, but he does have one target above all else this season and whatever way that is reached is irrelevant, it is not a short term fix, the club has played brutal football for a long time, its not going to be fixed overnight or over the course of one season.

If the situation is the same next year I would be concerned, but when we are sitting third int he league, on a decent cup run and winning most of our games I find it very hard to bitch and moan.

Not unusual considering where the game was, amusing though of course.

I can't see the link because I'm on a train.

I'm guessing it's Bolivia? Are they not unbeaten at home for like 1 million matches?
