Ball Busting Bike Seat.

The seat on my Giant Defy is killing me. Its one of these on a D-fuse seatpost.

Pardon my description .

That space between the balls and the arse. The Barse.

After 30km it feels like I have been turn upside down and beaten with a bat continuously, right on that spot.

Any recommendations on a decent seat at good value . I have a decent shammie , which helps. But I need a more.

Had the same problem when I switched to a road bike last year(also a defy) it was so uncomfortable but everyone said stick it out and it will get better! It didn't! I got a new saddle in the giant shop that had a little more padding on it and that did the trick for me.

Padding is not the answer - support is. Probably the most comfortable saddle you can get (Brooks B17) has no padding. I've done 300k on it without absolutely no issues.

Google sit bones and then measure them. As WA says these support your weight. Your squishy bits shouldn't take any weight

So having measured your sit bones, can you then approach buyong a seat being guaranteed that it will be comfortable? If so, how do you go about it?

Have you had a bike fit done? You're sitting on the wrong part of the saddle by the sound of things.

I got the bike shop to fit me but I was not right for me. Heel to the pedal was a little short. Knees hurt.
I fitted the bike via youtube using measurements, and after a bit of niggling here and there I think I got it right.

Last ride I did 55km with the seat tilt forward about 10mm off level. It helped.

But I still felt like I had been molested by a giant for 2 days after.

I just dont think the seat is right for me. I need more weight baring on my arse cheeks and less on my Perineum.

That brooks seat looks good. But on a road bike? I dunno.

I agree - aesthetically wise, it doesn't particularly suit a carbon fibre road bike. I put mine on if I'm doing a 250k+ ride - my arse is covering it anyway and when you're out all day and half the night you really don't care what it looks like.

I have defy with d fuse post too...changed my saddle to a specialized romin pro with the big cut out in the middle....very comfy now....maybe try a saddle with cut out...I cant use anything else..

Same, B17 on the road bike, Brooks flyer on the hybrid. For those more concerned about aesthetics, the new C17 could be worth a punt, though personally I also quite like the look of a leather saddle.

To be honest, you might not have gotten it right. A mate of mine had this exact issue and changed saddles 3 times with no joy. After much badgering he went for a decent bike fit and the problem was gone.

Having said that, if that Selle Italia saddle with the cut out does work, well and good. If it doesn't, get a bike fit.

I changed it up to a brooks cambium and with a bit of tweaking over a few rides i haven't actually noticed any discomfort since. Its a little heavy but the comfort is well worth the trade off. Intend to be using it for a very long time. It squeaks a little bit tho, I'm really hoping that'll go away.

10,000kms of suffering sounds like you gave it more than a fair chance. :eek:

It's a bit on the narrow side so may not suit all but to be honest I've yet to find an uncomfortable saddle so I wouldn't be best suited to give advice.

One guy said to use a small amount of grease to stop the squeak

I had the same problem with my stock selle x1 that came with my Cube, never had a problem with my old aluminium bike and saddle then just all out pain and numbness so after reading on here got a pro bike fit done and sure enough got rid of the numbness but not the pain from that bloody saddle and I have given it a few thousand km's over the past year. A few weeks ago I got an ism adamo century saddle think it was €117 on wiggle and boy what a difference the saddle is no longer an issue so now if I'm struggling just have to blame myself for being lazy and not training more!! I don't think I will ever be leading an a1 race or anything so a little extra weight does not matter comfort is king and sure I'm the heaviest thing on my bike anyways so if anything needs to be lighter it's me!

Aidan Hammond - think it's bikefittingireland.ie. He's out in Kilmacanogue. I had a session with him last year and being able to ride pain free is money well spent.

Go get your sit bones measured in Cysleways. Once you have the measurement go by a Specialized Romin that is the correct width. Basically from the sound of it you are sitting on your Barse as you call it when you should be sitting on your bones. Money or padding wont solve this just buy the correct size saddle. If that doesnt work then go get a full bike fit done.

Agree with the above^^^

You need to be sitting on your sit bones and not soft tissue.

When you get the right size saddle to support your sit bones be prepared for a little discomfort on your sit bones until you adjust. After the breaking in period you shouldn't have any pain.

I'd also try and get out of the saddle every 15min, even just for 5-10 seconds. It'll take off any pressure and allow blood to flow.

Cheers for the advise.

Took the soft seat of my commuter and did 50km on it last week. Seemed like a good idea , but at 20km the seat was torture on my seat bones.
So got a second hand Brooks.
Just done an hour on the turbo on it and my butt is not sore. Looks odd but who cares. It feels good.

Cant wait to get out for a nice ride on it.

Very interested in this. I'm looking for a new seat which is wide enough for me but I've always dismissed the brooks saddle as I just don't like the looks. But if its comfy maybe its worth rethinking.
