French term to refer to butchered films...

Hi,

Not sure if this will get any attention in the Francais forum, but...

I'm trying to remember a term, which I think was part of the French film criticism of the 1950s (Cahiers du Cinema), which roughly translated as "damned film" or "condemned film" or something along those lines.

I think heard it used by the American film historian Joseph McBride when talking about Orson Welles film The Magnificent Ambersons.

It is a French term. Has anyone any idea what it is?!

No, it was a sympathetic term. It is usually used deferentially, to refer to films which merit respect as a result of having been mutilated, usually by a studio or someone else.

Not sure who said this, but I've read about “La splendeur des Amberson“ as being “un film amputé et charcuté“.

oh yea...... butchered is the same as well : Charcuté (and it's the same actually)

I read "charcuté", "mutilé" and "maudit" about this movie. The first two terms referring to "butchered"
