The Dunboyne 4 Mile is on Sunday 29th March, might be nice to do that distance if you decide to do Sportsworld in May, tho might be too close to the K Club...it's a great race though! (Yeah, you guessed it, I'm a member of Dunboyne AC so a bit biased :o)

Sounds good too, and not too far away, will check it out - Cheers :-)

Cheers for that, good timing too, April would be a good time to build up to a race from now. Your log is brilliant by the way, serious mileage & pace, I'm in awe, really enjoying reading it!

    Yes perfect timing for ya!
Ha ha not so sure about 'serious pace' but sure we'll get there eventually:D
    Really enjoying yours too!

Just wondered about the session you did last night. Do you do any warm up before a run like that? A slow few miles at 10+ pace or do the coaches do other warm up and cool down exercise with yiz? Just curious!

No just set off on that run, in hindsight it probably wasnt the greatest of ideas on my part, as that kinda pace for me is steady going, whereas for others it was more of an easy run. Last night was out on the road, seemed to be more members meeting up to go for a run than anything, whereas Thurs night sessions is on the track so I am guessing more guidance and structure. I guess last night just wanted to go along and see what it was all about, going forward will be more prepared, will do mile or two of easy warmup beforehand now that I know what to expect.

Yeah I'd be the same jumping into a sub 9 min/mile. I'd defo want to ease into it a bit more gradually. Now you know how things work you can work your warm up around it.
Best of luck with the track stuff on Thursday! Looking forward to reading all about it!!!

Plan on both of those myself. Likewise I've heard great things about the kclub and I did terenure last year so that's on the list again.

    Wednesday 28/01 – PM
    Cross Trainer WU (15 mins)
    Toning Class (45 min)

Not a great class to be honest, different instructor & was a bit all over the place. Serious DOMS from Tues am class so struggled a bit but got it done. Mainly arm stuff, with some core.

    Thursday 29/01 – AM
    Distance: 4.10 mi
    Time: 42:48
    Av Pace: 10:26 min/m
    Av HR: 151 bpm

Nice easy one this morning to stretch out the legs, absolutely freeeeeeezing out! Unfortunately cant make session with club this evening but maybe not a bad thing for this week as should prob be going easy on the knee for the moment, and Tues night for me was a very steady pace. Will go along on Sat all going well anyhow.

    Friday 30/01
    Cross Trainer WU (15 mins)
    Spin Class (40 mins)

    Saturday 31/01 Steady - AM
    Distance: 6.09 mi
    Time: 55:16
    Av Pace: 9:04 min/m
    Av HR: 167 bpm

    Splits: 9:31, 8:55, 8:44, 9:22, 9:14, 8:42, 0:47

Went along to another club session on Saturday morning. Did a 0.6 mil warm up and cool down before and after nice & easy. The planned route was a 5k loop, so went with the group that was planning 10k and said I would see how I got on. The planned pace was 9-9:15 min/m so I said that could be a bit too fast for me but would give it a go. Headed off with a small group of 5 others, and ended up in second group after the first half mile or so.

First mile felt good and eased into it, and then picked up the pace a little. Wasn’t too sure what the pace was but felt like it was a good steady effort for me, not too difficult but most def working. Plenty of chatting during the first mile, but it got very sparse after that. Took a quick 2 min break after first loop and hit off again. Coming towards the end I was starting to feel it, but glad to see that I maintained the pace & finished strong. Finding it a real motivation to run with others, feel that it makes me put in more effort & my mind doesn’t wander as much as am trying to keep focused and keep up with others! Looking at the average hr it was at the top end for a tempo session (as per Clearlier’s spreadsheet and previous max HR test) so it will be good to monitor this going forward to see how I am doing.

Had a nice cuppa afterwards and met some of the other members who all seem really nice. The people I was running with were really nice and supportive, I’m guessing that pace was probably pretty handy for them but nice that they didn’t leave me behind along the way. Think my mind is made up that I am going to join the club anyhow, Im sold!

    Jan Miles (Garmin): 72:35 mi

Happy enough with that as took almost a week off when my knee played up a bit & only really getting back into training properly. Feel like I have finally gotten going again, glad to have finally plucked up the courage to check out a club and really enjoyed the first two sessions.

Aim going forward is to steady increase the mileage & put in a good 2 months of consistent training before targeting a 10km in April to check my progress. It’s nice to have a plan finally!

    Sunday 01/02 Recovery – AM
    Distance: 3.1 mi
    Time: 33:44
    Av Pace: 10:53 min/m
    Av HR: 139 bpm

After a completely alcohol free January (longest month EVER!), had a lovely takeaway and a couple of glasses of wine Sat night to celebrate. Headed up to Marley Park with my sister on Sunday morning, she wants to get into running & I am only too happy to encourage her, so did a nice easy 5k around the parkrun route, felt good to stretch out the legs, and everything feels good after Saturday thankfully.

    W/C 02/02

    Monday 02/02 – AM
    Cross Trainer WU (10 mins)
    Spin Class (40 mins)

Aim for the week is to go along to club again on Tues & Sat morning, will decide about the Thurs session later in the week.

That's brilliant. See if they're involved in the Meet & Train leagues. Great (short!) races to do with your clubmates.

Good for you. I lasted until 25/1 then had to celebrate Raheny so fell off the wagon :o

Cool will look into the Meet & Train leagues, never heard of it to be honest, boards is just full of super information!

Ya thinking K-Club is the one to go for, its nearby and is on at a good time for me, great to have something to work towards.

Well done on getting to 25/1 - Celebrating drinks after Raheny were a must, very well deserved! And getting from 1/1 to 25/1 was great going. I wont be doing a drought like this again in a hurry I dont think!

They're not really advertised but your club captain should know all about them. If not just post up and I can give you the details.

    Tuesday 03/02 – AM
    Gym Routine
Legs (20 min), Arms (30 mins), Core (10 mins)

Had a meeting I had forgotten about Tues evening so unfortunately didn’t get to go to club session after all. Will be back to it next week!

    Wednesday 04/02 – Rest Day
Back to the dreaded dentist again so was fit for nothing after

    Thursday 05/02 - Tempo – PM
    Distance: 5 mi
    Time: 46:07
    Av Pace: 9:14 min/m
    Splits: 9:42, 9:38, 8:35, 8:23, 9:50

Went out yesterday evening with no real plan, just to get a few miles in. Ended up sleeping in that morning so I was a bit all over the place. Forgot my HR strap then so plan to go by HR went out the window too. Decided on a 2 mile WU, followed by 2 miles @ 5km pace. I wasn’t too sure what that pace should be, I figured around 8:30-8:45, and then do a CD. Enjoyed the first 2 miles as legs felt fresh after a days rest and then picked up to a pace that I felt I could reasonably maintain for the 2 miles. I didn’t look at my watch just tried to run by feel and what I thought I would keep going with, and then finished with a 1 mile cooldown. Looking at the splits this morning happy with the effort for my first attempt at this kind of run. Since last week its like I have suddenly realised that I can actually run a bit faster so want to test it out! Hoping to try a proper interval session next week.

    Friday 06/02 – AM
    3.2km (2 mi) (Treadmill Recovery Run) – 22 Mins
Gym Routine: Legs (20 mins), Arms (20 mins)

Legs were a bit tired so nice to stretch them out before doing normal gym stuff.

I am out tonight so wont make club run tomorrow so will head out Sunday instead, hopefully something longish but will see how it goes.

And finally…..as of this morning I have officially joined the running club, ohhhh exciting!!

Hi M, just catching up with your log -- looks like the club running is already having a positive effect on your pace, that's great. Glad the knee has cleared up too.

I really hope so, guna aim for a 10k in April, prob the K Club all going well so will see. Now in fairness have never done a 10k before so it has gotta be a PB!! But hoping to aim for 55ish, I am hoping that seems realistic!

    Sat 07/02 – Rest

In this case rest = hangover + eating copious amount of junk food, very bold indeed!

    Sunday 08/02 - LSR – AM
    Distance: 10.31 mi
    Time: 1:44:36
    Av Pace: 10:09 min/m
    Splits: 10:14, 10:08, 10:16, 10:21, 10:32, 10:30, 10:13, 10:07, 9:38, 9:40,2:56

Headed out around 9am and it was really foggy, could hardly see in front of me. Could really feel the effects of Fri night & Sat, and got the most awful stitch around Mile 4 which lasted a good half an hour no matter what I tried – completely self inflicted & extreme dehydration was the cause. For the last 3 miles was feeling a bit better so picked up the pace a little to estimated MP and it felt good.

I am having a bit of an issue with my runners, got Mizuno Wave Inspire 9’s in September, was my first trip to AK & was delighted with them, took to them straight away and sorted out any issues I was having beforehand. For xmass got a pair of 10’s which I have started to break in. Have worn them a few times, but Thurs evening started to get a numbness in the ball of my left foot, and ended up having a sore calf after the run. Again on Sunday around mile 5 same sensation set in. I think as I was taking it easy it wasn’t as uncomfortable but still it lasted for the rest of the run. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? I don’t think the laces are too tight, and they are the same size as my other runners and do feel really comfortable etc. I know I should have gone back & gotten fitted again but they were a prezzie & I did suggest them as I figured they would be very similar to my own.

I wear the same inspires and the paradox recently and have occasionally had the same issue. Changing to a thinner sock has helped. Also even the laces aren't tied too tight generally I found just loosening the fit of the laces around that middle part of the runner is good. Then I still tie them as normal.

    Hope that helps!

Cheers Laura, will give that a go, just though it was weird as it has never happened before, will loosen out the laces fully and see if that makes a difference

It's really annoying when you have the perfect pair of runners and then they go and 'upgrade' them to the next version and they're just not quite right. Happened me before and I ended up searching online for old stock of the previous version and bought a few pairs quite cheaply. You could compare the technical stats of the two versions (www.sportsshoes.co.uk is good for this) and it might give you a clue where the changes have been made.

    Monday 09/02 – PM
    Distance: 2.62 mi
    Time: 26:58
    Av Pace: 10:18 min/m

Got out after work for a quick loop, really just to stretch out the legs after Sundays LSR & spin that morning. Felt a bit sluggish but nice to get out straight after work all the same.

    Tuesday 10/02 – AM
    Cross Trainer WU (10 mins)
    HIIT Class (40 mins)

    Tuesday 10/02 – Steady - PM
    Distance: 5 mi
    Time: 45:58
    Av Pace: 9:12 min/m
    Splits: 8:55, 8:43, 9:08, 9:32, 9:41

Headed to club run this evening, was running late after work so hadn’t done any WU. Again the group headed off (smaller group this week, 10-12), and was at the back of the group beside another girl and started chatting. After a few minutes I knew the pace was just too much, looked at my watch and saw 8:xx and knew I was in trouble! Stringing any kind of a sentence together was a challenge. Was doing the same 10k loop again, so when I got to the 2.5 mi point said I was going to turn back myself. It really was too fast & I was pretty wrecked after it so took it in my own pace on the second half of the run, hence the weird splits. I am glad to be pushing myself and I am hoping that joining a club will help with pace, but didn't enjoy that run at all, mostly my own fault and not being fully aware of my pace, next time I just need to let people off ahead of me and work to my own pace while still pushing myself. I guess it also kind of depends who is running, this week everyone seemed to be a lot faster than me, but then another week could be someone at a similar level so have to take that into account. Also have to take into account I did lsr on Sunday rather than Sat last week. The average pace was slightly less that the Tues & Sat of the week before last when I also ran with club group, and where I actually really enjoyed the run and gradually got faster rather than taking off too fast and struggling to finish. Anyone lesson learned, I will get into the swing of it yet!

    Wednesday 11/02 – Rest

    Thursday 12/02 – AM
    Stepper WU (10 Mins)
Free weights, Squats, lunges, core (30 mins)

Plan on doing a circuit class tonight, just not ready to do club track session yet, giving myself a few weeks to build up to that one. Will get out tomorrow for a few miles, and do lsr most likely on Sat morning all going well, and throw in a visit or two to the gym too.

+1 but with the Wave Riders for me. I'd run in these a good bit a few years back, and even had a few backup pairs I'd bought in a sale. So I hadn't been shopping for a while. Anyway last summer I needed a new pair and bought the Wave Rider 17 on the internet from the US (it's been so long, they weren't selling the narrow versions in the UK any more...). But I ended up getting pain in one foot soon after & am pretty sure it was due to the shoes. I brought them along with me when I went to the shop to get fitted and one of the assistants explained that in the design for the 17s they had changed from a flexible midfoot to a stiffer one. It's something pretty significant I would think so a pity they don't highlight these things.

Anyway ended up with Saucony Jazz which I love even more than the old-style Wave Riders so it was a positive experience overall :)

Hey, sorry to hear of your club experience the other night. Really, you should be placed in a group or on a run suited to your current fitness. Ideally, you shouldn't be left to run on your own (safety first but it also defeats the purpose of a club run. Is there a captain or co-ordinator you can have a chat with?

I had checked into the spec and it seems ok to me, but really I haven’t a clue! Have been kinda avoiding wearing them again, but I think tomorrow will really loosen out the laces and see how I get on, they are really pretty so I want to keep wearing them, how sad is that!!!

This buying runners lark is a lot more technical that I had first realised!! I had read a lot of reviews and they seemed to be very similar, but I guess there would be a change like that between the two versions and I wouldn’t have picked up on it. Will give them a few more outings and see if it improves!

Loving the look of the Saucony Jazz by the way!

On a Tuesday the club just meet up for a run around the local area so I guess its not a session per say, Thurs night is on the track and sounds to be a more structured. I don’t want to be holding anyone back, but I def cant do that again or I will collapse into the ditch and never be seen again! I guess it depends on who else is there, and also it is mainly my own fault for not saying something and just slowing down. I don’t mind at all running on my own, but as you said the purpose of me joining was to run with others! There is no meet up this Sat but next week I hope to talk to someone on it. I also need to go along to the Thurs session on the track to get a feel for that, but kinda putting it off for another week or two until I build up my running a bit more and am confident I will be able for it, and I don’t want to risk an injury. Im sure it will iron itself out, just feel like Im a bit clueless at the moment. Need to meet other newbies and people at a slow pace like myself.

Have you had an introductory chat/session to establish your current level? I'm sorry to hear you're putting off your next structured session...as I said before, in an ideal world, you would be slotted in with other runners at more or less the same level as you. I'll sure if your club heard you were contemplating putting off a Thursday session because you didn't feel ready they'd be horrified (well they should be :) ). Hope your chat goes well. Don't be afraid to tell them of your concerns. Write them down before :)

I especially like the coral/white pair (also have the turquoise) but am not really paying attention to style anymore, it's so hard to get the right fit. The Jazz are for neutral/supinating runners (I supinate), and are light but cushioned (no support).

In relation to your laces comment above, only thing I'd add about the Jazz is that it's the first pair of trainers in ages where I can securely tie them but don't have the feeling of the runner pressing down onto the top of my foot ... (I have a high instep). When I tried on the Jazz in the shop and went outside for my test run, I was thrilled about this :).

Havent really had an introduction to be honest, but in fairness to the club they are in the middle of arranging an event so seems to be a bit of a bad time, but come next week should all be ok again all going well. I will def talk to someone on it as I do really want to get involved and improve, and in fairness they do seem well run club etc. Good idea will write it all down, as otherwise I could be waffling for the night!

Ya, I know it shouldnt matter what runners look like, its all about the fit etc....but some are just SO purdy!!! Is it bad that I care more about running clothes and shoes than I do about regular clothes??!

Finally an update! Feeling like I have gone off the face of the earth this week, and to some degree I have. Its been a manic week to say the least, with no running done at all :( Life just got on top of me, but will be back to normal from next week. Pre-marriage course this evening & all day tomorrow so that is ruling out more running time, but will be back fighting fit next week.

    Quick re-cap:

    Friday 13/02 – PM
    Distance: 3.1 mi
    Time: 29:11
    Av Pace: 9:25 min/m
    Splits: 9:50, 8.45, 9:41

Just a quick run after work, had planned to do a long run on Saturday morning so took this one handy, nice to get a few miles in in day light. Easy first mile, upped the pace for second, and took it easy for mile three.

    Sat 14/02 & Sun 15/02 – Nada
Up to 90, nothing remotely fitness/running related done – enough said!

    W/C 16/02

    Monday 16/02 – AM
    Cross Trainer WU (10 mins)
    Spin Class (40 mins)

    Wednesday 18/02 – PM
    Toning Class (45 mins)
    Khai Bo Class (45 mins)

    Thursday 19/02
AM - HIIT Class (40 mins)
PM – Circuit Class (1 hour)

Dying to get out running, really missed it this week, schedule will be returning to normal next week.

Have SO much reading to get caught up with the training logs!

    Fri/Sat/Sun 20/21/22 – REST

Attended the most “riveting” pre marriage course Friday evening & allllll day Saturday, with hangover recovery from the effects of same on Sunday!

Have had a really rubbish two weeks running wise, so wanted to get back on track properly this week and stop with the faffing.

    W/C 23/02

    Monday 23/02 – AM
    Row (5), Arms (15)
    Spin Class (40 mins)

    Tuesday 24/02 – AM
    Row (5), Legs (15)
    HIIT Class (40 mins)

    Tuesday 24/02 – Steady - PM
    Distance: 5 mi
    Time: 47:30
    Av Pace: 9:30 min/m

Contacted a really helpful lady in the club last week to ask about the Tuesday session and other groups etc, so she put me onto another group who meet on a Tuesday also, but who are doing a much more sustainable pace for me, so went along last night and really enjoyed it. My watch died before I started but did 5 miles, and the average pace was 9:30 so very manageable but challenging at the same time. Really nice group too, so think I am onto a winner! Delighted as although had enjoyed going along to the other group, it was just way too fast & I had started to dread going a little bit as I knew I would be in bits afterwards.

    Wednesday 25/02 – Recovery – AM
    Distance: 3.3 mi
    Time: 34:45
    Av Pace: 10:33 min/m
    Av HR: 153 bpm

Legs felt a bit tight this morning after last night so took it nice and handy. Rotten morning again but not very cold, just rain, the really wet kind too! Right hip flexor felt a bit tight so will foam roller later on.

Delighted to see you're in a more suitable group now and are enjoying it more and sure it'll be no time before you're back in the other group again:)
