Falcao looks offside in that first pic. Can't blame Rooney for not playing it to him.

Pity the performances don't match these stats.

he is holding his run, clearly looking across the line of the defenders. it is under instruction from the manager to play it safe at all costs

This is what you get when you have Van Gaal. From looking at his time with Bayern and the recent Dutch job, LVG seems to love his tactically disciplined midfielders, even when it is at the expense of a midfield that does well in possession. Rooney has been doing a lot of tracking back so LVG probably trusts him there more than the other options.

ugh, wish we got Kroos :'(

your point stands overall - we're definitely not finding enough of these kind of passes - but in the first pic falcao looks offside to me (yes, i'm looking along the line) and watching that in real time last night i thought that was why Rooney checked back, otherwise that pass is a no-brainer. So there are probably better examples even from last night to illustrate the same point.

anything to be said for a change back to man utds dna of 442 with rooney dropping back to make a 4-5-1 when we don't have the ball?

    de gea

    Rafael
    Smalling
    Rojo
    Shaw

    Valencia
    Herrera
    Blind
    Di maria

    Rooney
    Falcao

Looks a foot ahead of the 2 defenders you can see in the image imo.

We should have signed cuadrado in January

but dont you know, its not possible to sign players in January, plus we have the mighty Adnan and Tony V to dig us out.

I'd drop falcao and play mata just behind Rooney in that line up

He also had the option of RVP calling for a pass,we've criticised Cleverley for doing this sh1t before so when you see a player of Rooney's calibre it's criminal.

Wouldn't mind seeing that line up, looks a well balanced side, that set up worked fine for SAF for yonks.

Im more worried that rvp seems to be the player that is undroppable to van gaal. rooney gets shifted around, falcao has not played when fit. i think van persie has actually played worse thean falcao since the new year but its falcao who seems to be getting the stick from media.

would like to see a rooney/ wilson attack vs preston as it definatley needs changing.

I doubt Rooneys vision allows him to see if a striker making a run is marginally offside.
More likely he didnt see the run at all.

    • Manchester United (NYSE:MANU): FQ2 EPS of £0.03 beats by £0.06.
    • Revenue of £105.7M (-14.0% Y/Y) beats by £4.88M.
    For the previous quarter.

Yeah because he's turned into a really blind and shít footballer all of a sudden.

Falcao is clearly offside when he's looked up there.

Regardless, Rooney should be on the end of those passes not looking to play them. Why Herrera is not trusted in midfield is a mystery to me.

(I think you mean Rojo being beaten, he was the defender trying to block the cross.)

Some of the replay packages don't go back far enough on that Ings goal. Evans was up the pitch because he was picking up the opposition player who received the ball with no United midfielder on him; the ball got played backwards, then out to the wing; so Evans was getting back, while also keeping an eye on the two free Burnley midfielders making runs into the box. He had a poor game, but I wouldn't criticise him for that goal.

Imo you would see the near side CB on Chelsea, or any well organised defence, going out of the line like that regularly enough. The two centre-backs can't always stay near the goal. Whenever there's a gap further along, the defence moves up or across to fill it. We still would have had a two vs one advantage in front of the goal when the cross came in if McNair had tucked in behind Smalling like he was supposed to.

Edit: Since I see so many people complaining about Evans I'll reiterate something I said last night. All of our defenders struggled because the defence was so disrupted. You cannot make so many changes to a defence and expect them to play like normal.

Sorry, as yourself and Liam pointed out it was Rojo I meant. Like I said, it was a moot point anyways as he wasn't involved in the play so can't blame him at all for the goal. It's his positioning that I'm worried about. He did push up on the second attacker but he didn't make much of an effort to get back and although I thought initially that it could be because he was half-watching the second attacker, there was no one within a long way of him. There were another couple of times where he was out of position or him and Smalling went up with Ings for the same ball. Granted, as you say it could be down to the changes in defence

Also Liam O mentioned about it being a witch hunt against Evans. It's not. I rated him very highly and thought it was going to be him and one other in our defence for the last year but this season he's looked bereft of confidence and shaky in a lot of games - like last night or Southampton away for instance. Maybe he needs an experienced head beside him in defence like he had with Rio and Vidic.

Ya clearly when your looking at it paused on you can look at it as long as you want and even then there was some debate.
Ive no idea what Rooneys vision and awareness of others making runs in behind is, he has never really had to look out for it and just cause I was a players vision to play a pass isnt good doesnt mean im calling him **** either.

But hyperbole all you want so you can use ur rolleyes.

Rooneys passing has been poor in midfield in a creative sense, and I dont know if its due to orders, poor awareness, little practiced.

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek obviously he saw the run but him making a call on weather Falcao was offside when its marginal is not something I envisage he did, if thats the case he is playing way too safe.

The one plus last night was that we actually opened up Burnley down the right,no coincidence that Valencia wasn't playing and our attacking play on that side improved no end.

Not surprising at all. Valencia has forgotten how to attack. He looks like he has no confidence going forward.

Yesterday was really worrying. We're in the worst form of the top 4 contenders and with tough fixtures to come I'm seriously concerned (for the 1st time) about our top 4 prospects.
It might take a heavy beating (Which we are due) for Van Gaal to ditch this 2 immobile strikers and rooney in midfield nonsense

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

I think we have a run starting March that's like Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in five weeks.

If the performances arn't going to improve, we need to make sure no points dropped on the current run, or we could really be struggling.

What definition of form are you working with? Under the traditional one, we're not. City are.

Rooney's big problem is he seems to favour either the safe ball or the default crossfield pass to the wings, time and again we've seen him getting into decent positions and refuse to take a chance with a through ball or a give and go followed by a burst into the box.

Even if Rooney played the pass there is no way Falcao would have reached it before defenders. He runs slower than Berba. It's just a waste of effort to even think about through balls with Falcao and RVP as strikers.

Really we need to win the next 3 games and then the run with Spurs, Pool, City and Chelsea is upon us and we've only got 5 points from 12 in the first round of those games, we were really lucky Liverpool were shít back then because they had 7 or 8 clear chances missed

If we get through that period still in the top 4 massive props to Van Gaal but I can't say I'm not worried

Can't really say we were really lucky Liverpool were poor back then when we were unlucky in the other games - had a ton of chances against Spurs to win the game and were in relative control against City before Smalling got himself sent off.

We need 9 points from the next possible 9. That'll put us on 56 points. That would give us a great platform for top 4. I think around 68/70 points will do it this year for 4th.
