Would an open bar for the whole event really be a good idea though I wonder?

I know it's the norm in many countries on the continent (and indeed many Europeans raise an eyebrow at having to pay for drinks at Irish weddings), but would Irish people tend to go bananas altogether on an open bar resulting in many more guests than is the norm making drunken shows of themselves?

It wouldnt be an issue for my crowd. It'd be fine. The main problem would probably be folk losing their drinks = wastage.

We are providing a lot of wine and bubbly. Almost a bottle per person. Dont know if hotel will let us use it all.

ooh, where would one even begin!

Would definitely love to have a fully outdoor wedding somewhere beautiful and tropical, like Hawaii, Maldives or one of the Thai islands. Fly in everyone we invite to stay the week, with open bar/open restaurant policy and everyone can pick what they'd like to have for food from their own Michelin starred chef or whoever they'd pick (if cabbage and roast beef is more to their liking).
Have a different band every night, and have everything from moshing on the beach to waltzing under the stars. Would also like to have one of those fun salsa kinda bands under a thatched palm cover, where everyone dances and has a bit of fun...

We had decided on it and we knew a few guests would take advantage of it, but that wasn't reason enough to not provide one for the rest of our guests. We got an itemised bill and it was standard stuff, pints and shorts and mixers and a few soft drinks, then we had the usual wine and bubbly as well. The couple who were legless would have been the same regardless. The other 90% were fine and appreciated not having to pay for a drink. The way we saw it was that if we were hosting any other party like a birthday or housewarming or dinner party we'd have provided drinks, so why not do it on the biggest party we'll ever throw.

And I'd hire Kings of Leon and Foo Fighters and a few other bands to get the place rocking.
