Dublin Bus - alterations to 46A and 47 timetables from Feb 22 due to Luas roadworks

Dublin Bus wishes to advise customers that in order to facilitate Luas Cross City works a revised timetable will be implemented on Routes 46a and 47 from Sunday 22nd February 2015.

These changes will improve reliability and punctuality on the routes.

The Mon-Fri daytime (off-peak) service on the 47 route will be reduced from Mon. Feb 23rd. Currently there is an inbound service (Belarmine-Fleet St.) every hour on the hour from 10:00 - 16:00 inclusive. From Monday Feb 23rd it will be reduced to one bus every 75 minutes. There is a similar change on the outbound service which changes from hourly to a bus every 75 minutes between 10:00 and 15:00 inclusive.

The 46A timetable is also 'revised' - by a reduction in frequency after 21:00 Mon-Fri from every 10 minutes to every 15 minutes.

Edit: as advised by Stevek101 below, the frequency is actually being changed from every 20 to every 15 minutes which is an improvement.

There is a new early Mon-Fri 46A service at 05:15 from Phoenix Park to Belfield.

You're right, my bad. That's obviously an improvement on the old timetable. I must have suffered from information overflow interpreting the changes!

I'd imagine we are going to see more of this over the coming weeks and months. Increased frequency on the cross city routes at the expense of lesser used shorter routes.

Also is this new 5:15 services one of the earliest scheduled departures? Roll on 24 hour routes!

I think that DB are being a little coy about this change in relation to the 47.

It has little or nothing to do with the LUAS works, but that offers them a handy smokescreen. The fact was that the running times on the route were too tight, and that the timetable, as was, was pretty much unachievable.

Now the buses have longer running times (75 minutes during the day and 90 minutes in the evening peak) that should deliver a reliable service. An extra bus appears to have been added to the route in the evening to maintain the 30 minute service.

The 05:15 Phoenix Park-UCD has been operating all along - it was just never in the public timetable.

Glad to hear that, the 18:30 service from Belarmine on Fridays was getting so unreliable that I stopped using it.

The 18:30 from Belarmine used to be the return working of the 17:15 from Fleet Street.

It will now be the return of the 17:00 from Fleet Street. 90 minutes should be sufficient for it to get out to Belarmine.

always good numbers on it too iirc, cleaners in UCD start quite early.

Earliest I'd say is the 33 from Balbriggan, first 27 from Jobstown is 0515 I think

I would guess it's on a "universal" driver duty rather than a regular 46a one and slipped through the net when the timetable was being compiled.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time this has happened.

Like I can understand why they may not want 24 hours routes due to anti-social behaviour. But I lived in Munich which has 24/7 buses and trams. The 1am tram to the club was the only night tram I ever had issues with. After that the trams were totally safe.

I cant see night routes working here with the fact we dont have open end with clubs. In most European cities, people slowly leave the club throughout the night. But here at 3 am everyone leaves, which is obviously a factor in why town is so rough at night instead. Instead of the tens of thousands of people leaving clubs slowly. We have tens of thousands on the streets within a few hours. Imagine having a nightbus full to the brim with everyone leaving the club at once? Its not going to work unless we change our licensing laws

It's moved on quite a bit from the days of "Them and Us".

The process of planning and implementing the roll-out of 24 hoour services is currently ongoing.

The requirement is,as is now normal,an NTA contractual one,so issues over the commercial viability do not arise.

It appears that there will be an initial group of "Trunk Routes" which will have a Regular Service extended through the night.
Initial indications appear to suggest an hourly frequency in each direction,with some form of An Lár integration to facilitate transfers.

One of the most often heard objections (This being Ireland,initial reactions to ANY change/improvement will ALWAYS be negative),is the Drunk & Disorderly one.

My personal opinion is that this is well overplayed in general terms,and can be dealt with effectively with a small and mobile extra security presence,all of which would be part of a Risk Assesment carried out by the NTA on any such "New" service structure.

The reality of Dublin "after midnight" is of a reasonable amount of existing business already out there,and a shed-full of NEW business lurking in the wings....both of these groups currently are in-thrall to the Taxi business and are paying through the nose for dedicated services to get to and from shift based work.

Gone are the days of the big Factories,where the horn blew at 4 or 8 hour intervals sending hundreds of workers racing through the gates to catch buses,lined up outside to bring them home.

The history of Dublins Tram and Bus services is littered with references to Willwood's,Jacobs,Players-Wills,Bolands,Johnston-Mooney's,Gallaghers,TEK,Merville,etc etc....In many of these cases extra Tram and Bus services were part and parcel of the business and most of those employers would have had relatively small car-parks only for Managerial grade staff.

We will never see this mass factory employment again,however,what we do have are plenty of 24 Hour Production Process locations which not alone require dedicated staff but also maintenance on a regular basis,with the Taxi fraternity currently being the ONLY means of transport for non-car users.

The NTA has'nt simply woken up one morning and thought ..."Hey lets do 24 Hour buses"...they have been probing and studying Trends in the GDA life line and indications such as the inability of City Centre businnesses to open stock-room's early to accept deliveries ,now point to demand,admittely latent in parts,but still there and awaiting satisfaction.

We need to step back from the old perception of the Nitelink/Drinklink Boozebus notion and start to look at the reality of a parallell world which is not inhabited by savages and incapacitated incontinents all out to kill themselves and anybody within their range...Thankfully,these ARE a minority and capable of being controlled and suppressed if the resources are deployed.

The extent of reactions to the 24 hour proposal is reminiscent of the Flat-Earth society,but the reality is of real society having a Public Transport requirement and of the Authority now being required to satisfy it.

Can't come quickly enough IMO
