Saw the Mary I game today. They were incredible. Game was over very early. John Meagher outstanding at center back. Liam Corry played Liam Mc Grath out of the game. David Reidy superb up front with Darragh O Donovan and Bill O Meara impressive too. Sham Kennedy and Ronan Maher solid in midfield. Phenomenal team they have. Will take some stopping. Jake Dillon didn't get a puck the whole game.

    Thank

    Maher midfield other player so

    Who was full

How did colm Barry cork play?

Barry played full back with Corry and Andrew Ryan from Toomevara in the corners. Stapleton, Meagher, English half backs. Kennedy and Maher centre field. Reidy, Hannon and Donovan on the 40. O' Meara, Corry and Cahill inside. Mike Brown from Ballyhea was in goal.

Barry had very little to deal with in fairness but was solid. Nearly gave away a goal with some slack following a quick puckout in the first half but recovered well, Had a strong second half alright as he was allowed drift out a little. Still think he's a half back but did well today. Slim to no chance of him moving to wing back for Mary I or Cork.

I was thinking PJ Scully got 1-1, but you don't have him down on the team at all fireball? Wearing 20 something on his back, so I'm assuming he was a sub.

Saw the second half, UL didn't have it all their own way for a lot of the game. They were being outfought in my eyes for the first 10 minutes of the second half (0-8 to 0-6 was the half time score in favour of UL) by a physically stronger looking GMIT team. They didn't pose too much threat up front and their scores all seemed to be coming from frees.

Then a long range free dropped short and was poorly batted out by a UL defender, where Jason Flynn was waiting at the edge of the box just left of the goal and he unleashed a thunderbolt into the far top corner. Outside of that, the game bypassed him in the second half and the only ball I can remember him contesting in the air after Dan Morrissey won brilliantly over his head.

That goal seemed to spur UL into action, a fantastic point by Forde around that time keeping the score ticking over. Tony Kelly stood up and hit two brilliant point from the wing and suddenly every shot UL took seemed to be heading over, another great point by David McInerney from about 90 yards or more out and also a great individual point by Kevin O Brien when he made an excellent catch, bet his man and stuck it over from the right sideline.

Thomas Heffernan made a break through the middle and handpassed off to Scully who buried it from close range and that put them 12 ahead. It was clear that UL were the classy side, some of GMIT's hurling was very poor. They didn't show the stomach for a fight early on which would be a concern. It might simply be a case of expecting a handy win after last weekend and that they are focused on bigger challenges ahead. Certainly, their display in the last 15 minutes would endorse their claims as frontrunner. Daire Quinn, McInerney, Kelly, O'Brien were best. Carmody was poor, and Jack Browne looks a touch slow to me.

I got that from the Independent, I didn't see it myself... tbh I was out of touch today, with results and everything. If I had known it was on, I would have ditched the college work to watch out but I ended up only hearing it was on as the game was over. Good win though.

Good that KOB is playing well at this level, it's a big step up again to intercounty but he's managed at every level to date.

How was Hannon? On paper, you'd imagine he's their standout player although Meagher is really classy too.

Hannon was decent. Not the standout forward for them yesterday by any means but held down centre forward well, linked up very well with the rest of the lads and caught some good ball. Chipped in with a few good scores too. He was being marked by O Neill though who was WIT's only impressive player so he did well.

Meagher is an outstanding player. A real general at centre back and so effortless with his hurling. Joy to watch.

I thought Tom Stapleton really grew into the game and had a fine second half- Corry at 2 had a fantastic first half but WIT were only playing a two man fullforward line so the backs in general were not under too much pressure. Still, the WIT forwards didn't get a sniff and most of their scores were from (soft) frees. Declan had moments, as did O'Donavan but it's hard to get motoring in college games, lots of rucks and mauls. Would love to have seen Gleeson on the pitch but WIT were very poor overall, think Pauric Mahoney got a couple of nice scores for them from out wide but that's about it. I would prefer English in at fullback but no real complaints on yesterdays viewing about any of the team... they have a huge panel and will need it as they are playing their postponed game against Maynooth this saturday before playing Carlow on Tuesday... Poor lads will be wrecked for their RAG week next week. :p

Mary I. 4-18, Maynooth 1-6. Result to be expected in fairness. Had plans on travelling up for it but couldn't in the end so no report but apparently Maynooth played very well just couldn't match the individual personnel Mary I have at their disposal. Mary I play Carlow next Tuesday evening with progression more than less guaranteed. Should be winning that one too handily although Carlow will be a much sterner test

Carlow beat Maynooth Thurs by 9-24 to 1-3 which put them back in it

    By my calc

Mary I now are +36 pd with 4 pts
Carlow +32 pd with 2 pts
    WIT - 2 pd with 2 pts

A 2+ win for Carlow at home to Mary I wud see them tru
WIT need Mary I to continue form and beat Carlow or post a cricket score.

While the absence of Gleeson and a couple of others for WIT wud not have changed the result against Mary I it cud make a difference in the total they need against Maynooth

Was at the Mary I v Maynooth game today. Was never a contest once Mary I got going. Maynooth are Ryan cup standard at best. They had a lot of injuries and just don't have the calibre or numbers to compete at this level. Silly idea to play in the Fitgibbon full stop. Mary I got two goals late on which flatter them a little. Overall I did not see too many stand out performers on the day but if I was to pick any it would have been David Reidy (Limerick) and Tadgh Gallagher (Tipp).
Waterford will hammer Maynooth btw with or without Gleeson.

Holders WIT beat IT Carlow on a scoreline of 3-13 to 0-09 points.

    The teams were as follows:

WIT: Walsh, Fox (Tipperary), Teehan (Kilkenny), Jerome Maher (Waterford), Tomas Hamill (Tipperary), Martin O Neill (Waterford), O Dwyer, Stephen Roche (Waterford), Langton (probably Kilkenny :P), Austin Gleeson (Waterford), Paudi Mahony (Waterford), Gavin O Brien (Waterford), Liam McGrath (Tipperary), Harry Kehoe (Wexford), Jake Dillon (Waterford)

Carlow IT: Clancy, Doyle, Ryan, Palmer, Young, Doughan, O Hanlon, Prendergast, Taggy Fogarty (Kilkenny), Micheal Harney (Waterford), Ian Byrne (Wexford), Stephen Maher (Laois), Cha Dwyer (Laois), Fagan (Meath), Bolger

Strong looking Wateford side on paper as I said and were very under-rated coming into the tournament. Serious statement of intent, would expect them to still be major players at the business end again. Goals from Ciaran O Brien, Austin Gleeson and Liam McGrath.

    Today's full results:

    Fitzgibbon Cup Group A
    DCU 1-6 Cork IT 0-17
    UCD 1-23 St Pats/Mater Dei 1-6

    Fitzgibbon Cup Group B
    NUI Galway 0-9 UL 2-24
    UCC 3-19 GMIT 0-8

    Fitzgibbon Cup Group C
IT Carlow 0-9 Waterford IT 3-13
    Maynooth University P-P Mary I

    Fitzgibbon Cup Group D
    Limerick IT 1-17 UUJ 0-11

Think that's Jack Langton of Clara. KK U21 and in with a shout of the KK senior panel in the next few years at current rate of progress.

UCC are out! A late Jason Forde free levelled the game, and NUIG beating GMIT means they and UL go through at the expense of the favourites.

On paper, that's a serious failure on the part of UCC, considering the depth of talent they have. The loss to NUIG was a killer. Sounds like Tony Kelly was phenomenal today.

Tony Kelly was class today the best player on the field but then UCC forget to play for the opening 20 minutes allowing UL to build up a lead that on a day like this was always going to be tough to make up. The shooting from both sides was poor with 15 each.
Cunnningham failed to use the bench three subs when your team is playing poor and leaving inter county players on the bench Foran, Collins, O'Brien, just to name a few. 11 inter-county forwards in the squad and you only use 8. Poor management when you knew that you had to score.

Lastly a penalty was given to UCC when O'Donnell was spear tackled to the ground when clear in on goal, UL blocked the resulting penalty. They should really bring in a black card for these tackles but the GAA don't see a problem with wild swings across the body or spear tackles when an individual is clear in on goal. Also the penalty has to go to one on one. It's impossible to score one under the current format.

Mary I out after scoring difference, tough on them after putting in a huge effort of playing 3 games in 5 days.

    Maynooth what's the story there?

The Maynooth goalie hasn't mastered the art of pfaffing around...

I thought Mary I were definitely through, they must be sickened. Couldn't afford to Carlow, although that is an absolutely ridiculous score that WIT put up. How are Mary I even in the Fitzgibbon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭Dien

Strange group alright. WIT beat Carlow well, Mary I trounce WIT, and then Carlow soundly beat Mary I! I did have a feeling Carlow IT must have vastly underperformed the first day out though so for me it's not a total shock. They have a lot of good hurlers albeit not from top flight counties so they will go in nicely under the radar. Maynooth are obviously just out of their depth.

I had a lecture at 3, so missed the match, but had heard from one of the players that both Tony Kelly & David McInerney would be missing; you could argue they are UL's 2 best players. Impressive to get the win without them.
