No private ones that I'm aware of. Check with Bus Eireann (i.e. Call them. Don't rely on the website, it's not always accurate).

I know it's going around the world looking for a shortcut, but you may need to get a bus to Maynooth or Dublin to get home. However not all the regular service Dublin busses stop in Maynooth...

I've been finding getting to anywhere in Kildare from Athlone a real pain.

Closest solution I could find is to get the train from Athlone to Kildare or Newbridge and even that isn't straight forward. Some of the times go from Athlone to Portarlington and then require you to get off and change either within the next 15 minutes or hour. The later times are absolutely jam packed despite it being a regular occurrence, once had to get a refund due to them booking in a group on a 3 carriage train that was already over the limit by the time it reached Athlone.

Busses seem to be a no go, the Maynooth one was the closest I could find, the train seems to be the only way to go but the service is an utter disaster.

I normally travel to Kildare but my general experience is the earlier the train the less likely it is to be completely packed. Booking online is a must as at least then you get a reserved seat.

Normally travel from Athlone to Kildare. Living in Athlone and visit parents in Kildare regularly. Rates at the minute are about €18 for a student.

Edit: The portarlington change goes to Kildare and Newbridge.
