Thanks Dubgal. Got back running with a walk/jog routine a little over 18 months ago following the slipped disc and was grand for almost a year then had a scheduled op last summer (nothing to do with running, but was banned from any exercise other than walking for 2 months afterwards ) so started all over again in September '14 . All good since, but I see a physical therapist regularly and an osteopath occasionally.

Fair play to you coming back strong after such an injury. I agree with you on the walking, it just does nt cut it! When the kids were smaller walking was my only form

Of exercise but at least I was pushing a double buggy so I felt I had something done! One more day, hang in there! Congrats on your Pilates promotion.

You're flying! Didn't realise your last break was so recent. Yeah, I've just accepted that I need to factor in regular physio and chiro appts into the budget. It's worth it if we can keep running :D Far from the days when running was 'free' except for the runners....40+ and the body don't heal itself...:)

That just reminded me of being on maternity leave. Myself and two friends who had babies the same age used to go for power walks with the buggies up the mountains. I remember one day we got up to the top of a fairly steep climb in some remote spot and a runner appeared from the other side and had to do a double take. I'd say we were the last thing he was expecting to see when he got to the top :D. Good times. I'm not sure I would have got too far up with a double buggy though, that must've been a good workout! But nothing trumps a run

It's definitely worth it. And cheaper than therapy. Sometimes I think I'd be in a home for the bewildered if I couldn't run. I still find it a bit odd that some people don't 'get' running. Maybe we're the crazy ones  ?

Could nt agree more. I can't understand people not loving the head space! And I will never understand how anyone would pick a gym over exercising outside. ( swimming excluded )

This one time at bandcamp my friend and I were in the gym on a treadmill each and all of a sudden she looked like she just got shot...she was off the machine holding her face...the guy on the machine in front if her was pelting a long and she got a smack of his sweat in the face :pac: Still makes me chuckle :D

Today was one of those good to be alive days :D. I timed my lay-off well, missing the worst of the icy blizzards and getting sunshine and a gentle breeze for my comeback*. With no real schedule to follow until Monday, I opted for a circuit inside the perimeter of St. Anne’s. It’s a lovely scenic loop mostly on grass or trail with a few tarmac paths. I only had time for one loop but I would have happily done another one.

I had planned to do a parkrun 5K time trial tomorrow before starting a 13-week training schedule but I’m thinking now I don’t fancy going eyeballs out again so soon after Raheny. It possibly defeats the purpose of taking those few days off in the first place. Plus, I’m pretty sure I know what I can run for a 5K at the moment so it’s seems like a lot of effort to tell me something I know already. Gosh that sounds very lazy and/or sensible, not like me at all. Has my boards account been hacked ?? Also I just checked back and I’ve done a race every weekend since October….ok, decision made. No 5K tomorrow.

*4 days off running, felt like 40
4 miles easy (35:30) on grass, muck, trail & tarmac
    (also Pilates and Body Balance)

Welcome back :D see, even the weather was glad to see you out running....but every weekend since October??? Yup, time for a race break missus, good call. Looking forward to seeing your race and training plan unfold!
Ps, what's the plan you'll be following?

I know! :o But see my first ever post for my disclaimer about my complete lack of sense and love of races :D. I just added them up: 8 XC, 5 parkruns and 3 road races.

I'm going to give this a bash:

    http://www.runnersworld.com/race-training/solving-5k-puzzle

I like it because it's effort and time based rather than pace and mileage based so I can customise it to allow for very gradual progression in terms of mileage. I know the 10% rule doesn't suit me, I need to increase mileage much more slowly. I'm hoping to get up to 30 miles p/w by the end of April on this schedule. I know it's tiddleywinks mileage for most people on here but it'll be an achievement for me!

How's prep for Enniscorthy going. I see there's a book open on yaboya's log, how do you like your odds ;)?

Ah that plan, that is very highly recommended. There's lots of really useful stuff in there, you'll be grand with that. It covers all aspects too, as it says, it gives you every piece of the 5k puzzle :)

Enniscorthy hmmm....I feel like a sub-par gladiator, gladiating for the amusement of the masses :D:D I'll probably sneak along the starting lines tying and loosening laces strategically. That'll be my main tactic :)

I'm looking forward to it. Just need to adjust it for 6 runs a week including a race most weekends for the foreseeable  I am a very slow learner...

I knew it! I always suspected there was a race gremlin who did that! Nothing to do with me not being able to tie my laces properly :o

Another awesome day for running! Loose plan was for a 60 min LSR but I changed it to 80 min when I saw the weather. I’d no car (Bungy Jr. needed it. Wait… what ?) so decided to head out the door and see where my legs took me. I loved every minute of this run. It felt effortless and made me think for the first time I might just be getting the hang of this longer distance stuff. DCM 2016 ? Ok so maybe I’m getting ahead of myself but If I’d kept going for another 4.1 miles today I’d have bagged a half marathon PB :). Another bonus of today’s aimless run was that I managed to find the perfect hill for my 40-60m hill reps. For the upcoming 5K plan I need something fairly steep, but close to home and safe/well-lit for night sessions. I found it at the entrance to a quite posh, almost gated, community (I would have said ‘estate’ but it doesn’t do this place justice). I hope I don’t get arrested for loitering (or speeding ;)).
80:00 (9 miles) on mix of footpath, grass, trail

Are you following the DCM Graduates plan? Clearier based it off that solving the 5K puzzle article you linked.

No, I hadn't realised. I've been meaning to read that thread but tbh would feel a bit fraudulent - I could call my self a DCM 'survivor' at best, not a graduate

Hmmm, I won't commit just yet. I'll see if I survive a half marathon first!

Wowzers, there is a LOT of info here. I'm only up to page 10 so far but it'll be a great resource for me going forward. Good to know so many others on here are doing similar sessions.

A change of scenery for today’s run. No particular reason, just fancied something different so took a tour of the north and south docklands area heading out past the Point, or whatever it’s called at the moment, East Link, Ringsend Park, Grand Canal Dock and home via that bridge that looks like a harp. Enjoyable easy paced run and no hassle at all until I was 5 minutes from home and some young fella on a bike decides it would be hilarious to cycle straight for me and then brake about an inch from my face. I resisted the urge to waste good running time lecturing him and thought how lucky am I that it’ll be a few years yet until Bungy Junior brings one of these charmers home
      50:00 (5.5 miles) on footpath

TOTAL WEEKLY MILES 18.5 (scheduled R&R week):)

Just a yoof showing his bike 'skills' off to his mates. Of course I was half a mile down the road before I thought of any withering put downs
