As for Studio 60, I always remember the line about "illiterate television" in reference to Reality tv. Always assumed that's why it was cancelled. Was the first Sorkin show I watched. Liked it but felt its biggest weakness was the fact the sketches weren't funny.

I think it was cancelled cause they wanted The West Wing, and it obviously wasn't. And I'd agree about the sketches bit. And Harriot being based on Sorkin's girlfriend just means she's really unlikable. But Matt and Danny are great together, Jack is a brilliant character as the show goes on and even Cal is great. Just love the characters and main stories and would have loved to see the development over multiple series....

Taken 3: Really simple of a story, but (refreshing for a Hollywood film) no one acts like a ****ing idiot. Whitiker's character is great.

Meanwhile, Supergirl has cast Melissa Benoist as it's lead, so guessing we'll see her popping up in Arrow soon :P

EDIT: Also, just finished my yearly run through of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Hate the way it was cancelled after one series. ****ing awesome show :(

    She was terrible in Glee

Taken 3 was as abysmal as I thought it would be and then some. Maybe it was because I bought a cinema ticket for it vs watching it at home on TV cause I didn't find the other two all that offensively bad.

Couldn't help but laugh that there'll be a Taken secret where the daughter's kid is taken!

I too rolled my eyes when that came on. I've only seen the first episode, have the second recorded. Thought the acting was pretty terrible at times but since it's only 3 parts I'll probably watch all of it.

I'm watching it, but at the same time it's a show where I'm also checking to see how long is left.

Just finished watching the latest episode of Banshee. Brilliant!

Fortitude looks like it might, erm maybe somewhat good. Want something to fill the void until Season 5 of Game of Thrones.
Watched the first 10 episodes of Gotham on channel 5 but will rewatch it on rte.

Out of left field but any thoughts on Gone Girl? A friend recommended it to me but I don't know anything about it bar the its from the guy who directed? Zodiac & Fight Club

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,949 ✭✭✭Pentecost

It's not bad. Based on a best selling novel. Worth a watch if it's not costing you anything.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Ageyev

Am ridiculously excited about Fortitude because I loved Sofia Gråbøl in The Killing.

I thought Gone Girl was a step backward for Ben Affleck as I found his performances in The Town and Argo to be great but he was back to looking like a fool in GG.

It is a decent crime/mystery/drama otherwise. Similarly title Gone, Baby Gone directed by Affleck is fantastic (based on a novel by the author of the Clint Eastwood directed Mystic River). Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan play a private investigators investigating the disappearance of a child.

Affleck directed The Town and Argo though, they were his projects. This was just an acting gig and his performance was more or less how the character was written in the book.

Nah I stopped watching after Super Bowl 30. The idea of super bowl 31 onwards just sounds so old. If only they replaced the numbers with a logo... :(

She's awful. Her getting her own story arc is killing Parks this season.

Is BBC showing it? They did a few years ago IIRC and I watched a bit then.

The Blacklist is back I think at half-time so I might watch that.

BBC don't have any Super Bowl coverage this year, it'll be all on Sky Sports 1 & Sky Sports 3, build up on 1 and the game on 3 i'd assume, and if the game is on Sky Sports 3 i've screwed as we don't have it.

Really looking forward to The Blacklist coming back on Sky Living.

Just finished binging Luther....wow. What a ****ing show. Loved it. Loved Luther, loved Alice, loved the psychos, loved the show. Shame it was only 14 episodes but I read there's another 2 incoming? What a great show, and straight into my top 5 shows of all time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,990 ✭✭✭✭Lithium93_

Just curious TSC, what are your top 5 shows of all time?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Ageyev

Luther was good, very good but it was a bit of a stretch. It felt like a US cop show set in London. The stuff with
the snipers shooting at the truck with the guy who had a bomb like!
    .

Kingsman is also awesome btw. Spent the last 40 minutes grinning. Really good. Like a proper homage to what James Bond used to be, in a non-subtle way.

This has been making me think all day. I wouldn't have a set top 5, and different days will likely see me give different answers.

The West Wing will always get number one, mind. Have watched it through 3 times now, and just always adore sitting down to a binge watch of it. While it has a bump in season 5, the rest is gold, and just a perfect mix of great writing, acting, casting, directing. And I'll always follow a watch through of it with a watch of Studio Sixty on the Sunset Strip.

After that, things are a bit more fluid, so these aren't in any specific order.

Person of Interest is a great blend of procedural cop show and sci-fi thriller; the sci-fi elements sneak up on you too. But some great story arcs, some great characters (Elias, Root and Shaw being standouts, but not to ignore John, Finch, Fusco and Carter, nor The Machine and Samaritan).

Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Dollhouse usually take up a single spot under the filename "Joss Whedon Shows"; Whedon is probably my favorite writer and director, and I grew up on Buffy and Angel. Even if repeat viewings don't hold up (the early seasons of Buffy have dated imo), it was such a big part of my teenage years.

Supernatural is ridiculously cheesy, full of plot holes and weird moments, but its something I always want to see as soon as it comes out, and I utterly adore, warts and all. Castle is probably the same; it's all about having fun and just chilling with some mysteries, not needing top level stories, but quite content with actors and characters I like.

Game of Thrones deserves a shout out too; I only watched it for the first time a few months back, catching up midway through last season. Can't wait to get on board the train for the upcoming season. Always love a show which instills a sense of "anyone can die", something a lot of shows don't (though is a common theme on the list in this post).

That's six, but there's others which, as I said, will drive up the list based on the day in question. Luther as mentioned above, Sherlock, Elementary. Despites it's massive flaws (including the thickest "smart" character I've ever seen), I watch Bones week in, week out. Doctor Who and Torchwood. Fringe. Lost (if you ignore the final episode), How I Met Your Mother (if you ignore the final episode), first season of Heroes.

Can't believe I'm forgetting Arrow, which is awesome, and Flash; can't wait till they start up on Sky again. Love the universe being created.

Worth noting I'm also just after finishing season 1 of Breaking Bad, which I assume most people will pop on their lists, but I'm nowhere near there yet. And still have The Wire, Sopranos, The Shield and House of Cards on a list to watch.

    What's everyone elses? :D

Great list but that did really stand out for me. I'd say at least three maybe even four of those would make most of my friends top fives maybe with game of thrones rounding them off. Don't think house of Cards would make it but it is worth bringing into the conversation for top 10-15 perhaps

I'm a HBO guy though so Sopranos, The Wire, Game of Thrones and Oz are hard to leave off any list like this. The last of which deserves a special mention imo as it doesent get mentioned enough because it predated most of these shows.

I often think The Shield is HBO just cos it is that damn good that it sits right up there with these shows for me just as Breaking Bad does and that would already make 6 not 5 but for me it's very hard to whittle it down to so few, why? well cos like yourself im a big Sorkin fan (Newsroom another HBO show I like) and The West Wing really has to be any list im doing up so then im up to 7 and tbh if I don't stop know the list will keep expanding although perhaps the first 7 ive thought of are arguably the best.

I have diverse tastes though and like things from Archer and The Boondocks to Arrow, Arrested Development and more

Big Hero 6 is brilliant. Watched it with the nieces earlier and will be watching it again with the missus later in the week. For a Disney film, it had some genuine laugh out loud bits.
