Would bumping upto the r9 290x be worthwhile over this

If the price is right than obviously, yes, the 290 is a league ahead of the 280. Having said that, the R9 290 non-x is generally much better value than the 290X, which isn't much faster - it's a bit like the GTX970 v. GTX980, huge price difference but small performance margin.

One you overclock the 290 you have a card as powerful or even more then the 290x

would you reckon that if i bought the 290x it would last me longer then the 280

A 290x would last you a lot longer than a 280 as its much bigger memory bus and ram.
Having said that and owning a 290x unless you get one at a good price I would just go with a 290 to save money.

What model R9 290x is it? I assume that's brand new?

You can good models of the 290 now for about 270 delivered, they wouldn't be too far off the 290X.
