Galaxy Ace 2: screen flashes but won't boot up

As per the thread title...Samsung Galaxy Ace 2.

It 'flashes' when plugged in - the screen brightens for half a second - then goes dark. That process repeats itself in a loop - a second between it 'flashing' each time.

It seems the battery holds no charge ...is this purely a battery issue? Has the battery packed in completely?

Any troubleshooting steps I can take?

I left it plugged in to charger overnight. It continued the 'flashing'. I managed to power it down. When I tried to power it up, this time it was flashing again - but it reached the point where the Model number would appear (with "SAMSUNG" underneath) and then it goes dark again.....repeating that loop over and over and over again...

    Anyone any ideas?

Got this resolved by getting phone into recovery mode by pressing power/home/volume up-down buttons simultaneously - then rebooting.

Problem wad exacerbated by a faulty usb-micro usb cable.
