Douglas Car park Behind Woolen Mills

I recently noticed that the county council car park behind the woolen mills in Douglas which recently closed down due to lack of use is not only,closed but it seems it is now been handed over to Douglas G.A.A. club.There is no pedestrian right of way any more either.

Some of the fencing has been moved so there is no longer access to the bog behind the school's either.

It just seems strange it has closed so quickly and changed hand's without public knowledge.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

MORE than €300,000 was spent on a failed long-stay car park in Douglas that’s now being scrapped because people refused to use it.
Cork County Council developed a long-stay car park at Douglas Woollen Mills as part of the wider introduction of a pay-parking regime for Douglas in May 2012.
The local authority confirmed this summer that the long-stay car park is to close because only five or six motorists were using it each day.
It has now emerged that the council spent 155,234 on resurfacing the car park, fencing it, lining it and installing security cameras.
A further 59,155 per year was spent on leasing the site and on ongoing security costs.
The car park is to close by the end of the year.
Fianna Fáil councillor Seamus McGrath said the problems with the long-stay car park became intertwined with the overall controversy surrounding pay parking in Douglas.
He said: “The parking bylaws introduced in May 2012 have been detrimental to the area. The long-stay car park was a key part of the overall pay parking plan.
“It’s really infuriating to see resources being wasted when there are so few resources available.”
Cllr McGrath reiterated his calls for reform of the pay parking regime for Douglas, particularly the introduction of a free one-hour grace period for motorists.
“I am continuing to seek reform of pay parking because it simply isn’t working for Douglas,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cork County Council is to make a decision on a county-wide policy for pay parking by the end of the year.
Council management said reforms of the Douglas system cannot be introduced until a full county-wide policy has been drafted.
