Don't like this adding on wages stuff.

Does a players increase in wages over their their career have to be added so.

Wayne Rooney arrived for in and around 30 million, do we retroactively have to go back and count up what he's cost on wages during each contract to determine what United have actually paid for him.

The fees whether it be one off or incentives based that go to the other club should be the transfer fee, and I'd prefer only that totted when we're looking for reasons to give out about players... etc

Wages are only added on when you want to bash.

    Eg. Falcao in the summer.

Messi was another good example, his fee is astronomical enough without adding his wages on to it..

this is the big thing, long gone are the days of the 5m bargain when your United. When we come knocking now it's big bucks. Even more so now

People know we have money, people know we need strengthening.

Can't even remember the last time we got a sub 10m bargain. Ashley Young 20m+, De Gea was near 20m I think, 25m+ for Shaw, Herrera, Fellaini etc.

We even paid a big fee for Smalling and Jones, relatively unproven players with good potential, who we plucked from smaller clubs. Still cost us a bomb.

Strootman at 12m two summers ago would have constituted as a serious bargain. Instead we are inevitably going to end up paying 40m+. French paper was running this morning we have tabled a big of 61m for Pogba :D

15m is the new 5m for us I'm afraid.

All of that still doesn't support to your original assumption that United need to buy from the big teams. United would have no problem using their money to build a quality squad if they spent the money wisely, buying the players that are easy to get from smaller clubs.

Anyone care to hazard a guess what points will get 4th spot this year?

We are on target for that so!

Hopefully European football takes some points off Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Spurs and Pool, hopefully they all get far as possible without winning it

We should be taking at least 10 from our next 4 before those games start to kick in, Leicester, West Ham, Burnley and Swansea

West ham away is gonna be really tough, hate that fixture!

We've only taken 4 points from the reverse fixtures of those games, shockingly bad

And how do you know we aren't paying their wages? I haven't heard anything like that.

You wouldn't be spoofing now would you?

    what have you heard?

Might have been mistyping on my part, but I wasn't supporting or advocating that we need to buy players from top teams.

Just indicating that if you are, your going to pay top dollar. 40m for Mata prime example.

But at the same time, there are recent examples of us spending 15m+ on players from smaller teams that are unproven.

I don't think we can operate in a market of bargain buys anymore. Granted value of money in football increases year on year, but with the recent values of players moving in and out, long gone are the days of buying someone for a few million quid.

I think that 15m+ is our "bargain buy" nowadays.

I guess the point I'm making are that it seems long gone are the days we dip down the lower leagues and pluck someone for a few hundred K or low million, and they turn out to be a massive success. Dennis Irwin always springs to mind.

If LVG plays 4 at the back, our players stay fit and 7/8 core players play every game, we'll stroll to 4th and battle it out with Arsenal for 3rd imo.

I don't know. Lose at anfield and it's all wide open I think. Spurs and Southampton aren't going away either.

But surely that is a point that is so obvious as to be not worth mentioning. Everybody is familiar with inflation. This all started with people talking about how hard it is to buy in January, but as Liam O pointed out there are good deals to be had if you go about it sensibly.

That last bit there is starting to worry me. Arsenal usually make it into top 4 and by the look of things I think they'll do it again. Spurs and Southampton just don't seem to stop and are showing no signs of collapse, which lets be honest we all thought would happen eventually in the season. Liverpool are gonna be full of confidence now after that Chelsea performance last night so they could also be a pain in the arse.

We desperately need to put things straight and LVG needs to suck up to the fact that his 352 system or 'philosophy' just isn't working out and as a manager who does follow and read statistics he will be aware that we play much better with 4 at the back in a diamond formation.

The trip to Cambridge is a great opportunity to put the diamond formation to use. If we can get a convincing 4/5 nil win, which we should be in all honesty and don''t concede or make silly mistakes at the back, then LVG might actually change things around in the BPL.

Our current PPG has us on course for 69 points. If (and it's a big if) the things I say happen, we could expect an increase to maybe around 75. That'd surely be enough for 4th.

Think we'll get top 4 easy and hammer Spurs and Liverpool along the way if we play 442 from here out, the signs of good football have been there when we've played it

If we stick with the 3 at the back I think we could be around 6th after the Pool game

oh how we have fallen..... lads doing up tally's in January to see if we can make 4th spot...:(

Maybe if we puff our chest out far enough and start throwing shapes it might intimidate other teams who dare to play us.

    Sad times indeed!

Given the investment in the squad over the last 18 months 4th place should be the least we should be expecting!

no surprise we got no offers for Anderson. He is crap - and out of contract in the summer. anyone who does want him will just wait to get him for free then.

Could see us going for Clyne (or Coleman) this window but I can't see us having any chance of getting Varane off Madrid.

in all fairness, we have spent 150m in the summer, £150,000,000 that is on top of the 37m we spent on Mata AND the 28m spent on fellaini.

there is actually zero excuse for us not to be challenging for the title and we not even in Europe this season and knocked out of the first round of cup

....but the least we are expecting is 4th, and we are in 4th? 1/2 points behind Southampton in third.

Just shows what a genius Fergie was. Most he ever spent on a player was 29 million.
