Aldos reaction says it all. Not worried at all.

Mcgregor is certainly reinforcing the irish stereotype alright.

The showdown with McGregor/Aldo was 100% set up. That's McGregors family around Aldo. Give over

It's a bit WWE isn't it then if it's set up.

As has been explained a large part of the game is promoting fights. I'm not sure what part of this you are misunderstanding

I think the McGregor showdown with Aldo after his fight was a set up. It makes sense. Business sense.

I set the alarm for this, but to be honest I skipped all the other fights bar McGregors... It was too bloody cold to get out of bed tbh!

McGregor was impressive. I have to say, before I had been a bit more of a fan of the personality and the brazenness, not that I admire that sort of behaviour, but rather it's amazing to see an Irish man believe in themselves. In sports we constantly look at ourselves as the underdog, often that mentality works and can pay off, but only in a David vs Goliath once off matchup. Conor doesn't think of himself as an underdog, he thinks he IS the best. He also thinks the current movement of Irish fighters are a generation of elite. That sort of belief doesn't grow on trees.

When the fight started it took about 10 seconds for Siver to start backing away and moving to his left. That's McGregor's strength right there, he's won the battle of the minds before either have stepped into the ring. He has such belief in himself that the media follow suit, they so badly want an iconic figure to sell the sport that they gladly fall for him and rehash his words in a biblical sense. Siver absolutely bought it, with a guy with such a vicious hook he needed to get up into McGregor and nullify that reach, he has virtually no padding around his ribs, I reckon one decent hook from Siver and McGregor would be in trouble..

But I think last night was the first time we've seen McGregor really at his best. Completely at ease and totally aware tactically speaking of how to spar with a potentially more powerful opponent. Aside from the spinning back kicks in the first round he was near flawless. Using kicks and jabs to keep Siver out of reach is to be expected, but the power he landed behind said strikes was impressive. His awareness whilst exchanging strikes is so impressive, eyes wide open and no wincing or turning of the head, it means whilst he deals clean blows Siver couldn't land any counter punches. As brash as McGregor is outside the ring, he is a complete class act within it. Last night he lived up to the hype, finally, imo. Before hand he simply lived up to the style brief.

As it stands, however, I cant see him winning against Aldo, who just looks so comfortable at that weight, and that's not something you can really say about McGregor, who really cuts to the extreme just to get within 145. Aldo can take a beating and give it, and it'll be an interesting mix of styles. One thing McGregor does however is really apply himself to the prep. The guys will do their homework and come up with a plan of attack, it should be a great match up, and I think win or lose it'll be a massive result for UFC.

Completely. That's why the UFC love McGregor so much, because he puts as much passion into the showmanship parts they want him to do as he does into the ring. He's admitted as much many of times. I did find it a little cringey, almost WWF style, with the bodyguards kinda laughing when he did it.

Why do people like it? It's fake.

If I wanted to see trash talk I'd watch WWE.

And lol at whoever said that Ali did it as well, the greatest there ever was. Once Mcgregor loses against Aldo he'll hopefully fade away.

It's a combination of the talk and the action, which wwe doesn't have. You're a strange character.

A demolition from Conor, delighted for him! I'm glad I stayed clear of this thread when the fights got going last night. Why can't everyone just enjoy our countryman doing well instead of starting childish bickering?

I thought Bendo beat Cowboy and I think Cowboy thought the same thing judging his reaction at the decision. Pendred got a shocking decision, I dunno about the rest of you's but I struggle watching him fight. Its far from entertaining. I didn't bet for him last night because don't like betting against Irish fighters but I think next fight I'll bet against him.

Mcgregors fights so far have been along the lines of Real Madrid v Sunderland to be honest.

Well, I wouldn't say it's ENTIRELY staged, but they certainly placed Aldo ringside and they certainly made McGregor aware and they probably asked him to do something like indulge the masses by shouting at him from the ring or something. McGregor just probably took it to the next level, the 'bodyguards' weren't expecting it so I wouldn't say it was planned to that level, but the event was certainly staged to a degree, yes.

Regarding the comparisons to Ali, well Ali was a showman as well, so there's that comparison, but what really sold Ali's fights was his style in the ring, and as I said above, McGregor is a true class act in the ring, and the training, the striking, the stepping, the blood, the sweat, the emotion - that's all real. It's very easy to see why people get behind him so much, regardless of what he does/says outside the ring.

I can defiantly see Mcgregor appearing in the wwe some day if hes still a huge star, especially with irish wrestlers such as sheamus and now Fergal Devitt there. He clearly got an awful lot of his persona from the likes of steve austin and the rock.

I wish him well, hes made the likes of myself who had no interest in the ufc before this only when Lesnar was in it come back and watch. So say what you will about him but hes doing a good job getting people like myself interested.

Yeah but who's fault is that? That's how these competitions work, you can't just throw someone into the deep end. He has to fight fighters ranked at his level. If a fictional real madrid got together and nobody knew their form it'd be the same idea. He talked the talk, and now he's walking the walk. He must be admired for that.

Disagree. Aldo has almost always had a tough time making 145

Really? I suppose I'm just going by the way he looks/carries himself at weigh ins.

I did read a possible comparison between Conor and Ali outside the ring. Best not to go there. There is no comparison. Ali wasn't perfect, but he was blessed with charisma. The most charismatic athlete in history. Effortless. Conor seems to try a little too much.

Also loved the clip of that Dublin pub. When the fight was stopped, half the place jumped up cheering. One girl up front stared blankly at the TV for about 5 seconds, turned around and said "is it over???"

Jesus lads, how bad is Pendreds striking? You'd think training with Conor would help him. I like the fella but he needs some serious work, blessed to be 3-0 in the UFC.

Could easily be 0-3 really couldnt he? I know King was on PED but that fight could easily have been stopped in the first, the last two fights you could argue for the other fighters (more so last night obv)

Conor looks a weight above Siver, as he looked against his last couple of opponents...Like to see him get a fight against a top 3 foe now.

I no huge Mcgregor but fan but no one can say he has had a easy road to the title shot.

His take down deference was perfect only hole I seen after that fight was Siver easily took the legs from under Conor with kicks a couple of times.Aldo doing that to Conor whole different story. If Siuver can do it Aldo will cut trough his legs.

End of fight hype in lead up to the Aldo defo staged, Aldo didn't even flinch surely natural reaction would be to prepare to defend yourself, unless you knew it was coming

UFC really pushing the Irish thing UFC logo on the Irish flag, has that ever been done with any other nation?
