Do Insurance Companies ask for IMEI number at start of policy?

Can anyone tell me if gadget insurance companies ask for the IMEI of the phone to be insured at the start of the policy or only in the event of a claim?

Anyone i've had dealings with always ask for any serial numbers or IMEI numbers up front on aplication
