History Project: Are newspapers Primary sources?

I need help, as online there is conflicting information and I need some advise for my evaluation of sources.
If I have a newspaper article that is from 1921, but is not written by someone who was at the ambush, is it considered a Primary or secondary source?
I have been told that if it takes place during the time of the ambush it is primary, however others said it must be an eyewitness account.
    Thanks!

Newspapers can be both primary and secondary.
An eye-witness account in the form of a statement or an interview with a witness is a primary source.
Any interpretation of it and it is a secondary source.
