Battery dying - Alternator issue?

Hi,

I've a 94 Toyota Hiace campervan and recently the battery dies off. Started with a new battery and drove for over 30 mins, then parked and the battery is run down, won't start.

From some google research it seems like the alternator may be gone. Before I send it off to a mechanic and/or have it replaced is there anything else I should check out?

If you're familiar with a multimeter you could check the charging voltage. Should be in the region of 14.3V across the battery poles with the engine running.

thanks, not something I'm familiar with but willing to learn. Seem cheap enough to buy from Halfords.

If it is less or more than 14.3v what does that indicate?

In your particular case it would seem to indicate that something is wrong with the charging system, i.e. probably the alternator.

thanks, as it stands both batteries are flat. I'll see if I can get my hands on a multimeter, jump start it and test

Don't forget to switch the meter to the 20V range first.

I think the Hiace earths through the alternator centre axle, check the earthing points are OK before getting a recon alternator.
Is the Battery light on when the engine is running?

Thanks guys,

Everything runs perfect when the battery is charged, no battery warning lights.
