I was away down wesht over the holidays and stayed over in a hotel for a couple of nights. As always there was a bible in the bedside locker. I don't think I have ever been to a hotel in Ireland where there wasn't a bible in the hotel room. A bitta light reading before bedtime, great for nodding off shure.

Why do they still do this? I can understand why it was done years ago but I don't get why the tradition lives on today. Surely all religious bible reading people would carry a bible with them, negating the need for having it in a hotel room?

It's not just ireland. There have been bibles in hotels I've stayed at in the UK and US too.

I think it's some religious sect (the Gideon's?) that donates them in the hope some poor lost soul will pick it up during their debauched hotel stay and be saved.

When you've brought a hooker back to the room and reach into the drawer for condoms but find the Bible instead. Might make you think twice. Doubtful, but maybe

I'm not saying it's only Ireland but Ireland is the only place I, personally, have noticed it.

The Gideon Bible Society distribute them.
They are trying to convert you.
They're not real Irish Catholic Bibles.
If you read them you you're a Souper, if you steal them you're a Super Souper.
    Go to confession.

Yes it is the Gideons..... It was in 1908 The Bible Project was started. The project was proposed by one of the association’s trustees who believed that the Gideons should make it their goal to put a Bible in every hotel room in the United States because it “would be a gracious act, wholly in keeping with the divine mission of the Gideon Association.”

Though the Bible Project was adopted in Louisville, Kentucky, the first Gideon Bible was actually placed in a hotel in Superior, Montana in 1908. Since then, more than 1.8 billion Bibles have been placed in hotels throughout the United States and in over 190 other countries, written in over 90 different languages.

I thought they only left New Testament books. They would be the same regardless of denomination IIRC

O Mighty Lord Satan, by whom all things are set free, I cast myself utterly into thine arms and place myself unreservedly under thy all powerful protection. Comfort me and deliver me from all of the hindrances and snares of those who wish to harm me, both seen and unseen.
Visit justice and vengeance upon those who seek my destruction. Render them powerless and devastated. Direct their malice to return upon them tenfold and to destroy them who would resent my being.
Fill my soul with thy invincible power, strengthen me, that I may persevere in my service, and act as an agent of thy works and a vessel of thy will.
This I ask in your name, almighty and ineffable Lord Satan who liveth and reigneth forevermore.
    Ave Satanas

I'm an atheist. I don't give a fook if people leave bibles in hotel rooms.

On a side note OP, I've seen this in a number of different countries. I've only found them a couple of times in Irish hotel rooms.

Yes it's only New Testaments they distribute but the books within are different between all of the Orthodox and Protestant traditions, some books are not considered valid by some but are by others.
The language of some translations are politically nuanced by order of the fine gentlemen who authorised them and some just by the age and place in which they were translated.

Surely if it is for their own good (to save their souls) then it is worth it?

I know of two Hotels in Dublin that used to always have a bible in the little stand by the bed, but now for some reason they do not. Guess people were complaining?

Old Testament is grand; pick any random chapter about locusts, magic or snakes and it's like reading Lord of the Rings. New Testament is very dull.

I have the mixed blessing of having to travel quite a bit with work. The bible can be found in the vast majority of hotel bedrooms.

Though you may find yourself without a belief system, or even lacking a curiosity towards spiritualism, there is always the time to read a few verses. Much of it is hard to read, even offensive. Yet there is a wisdom within the book that provide guidelines for the worst of us.

A line that I keep with me is: "He is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander and evil suspicions.
