    How do you find it?
You can use google cache to find recent prices, or they might be posted up on forums. I was able to use google cache to prove some dubious claims were incorrect, i.e. person might say "these are €6 now, last week they were only €2". I think there is some other site with historical pages saved where you might be able to go back futher or pick specific dates.

    T value bleach 2l was 65c now 67c
tesco value bleach is not great value, its only 1.5% active component, sodium hypochlorite. Others brands are typically 4.5% to 6%.

I noticed it first when I needed a specific % for something I was doing, and noticed a real lack of bleach smell.

Its quite sneaky how they label it.
Tesco Everyday Value Thin Bleach contains amongst other ingredients: Less than 5% Chlorine based bleaching agent,Disinfectant: Sodium Hypochlorite 1.5g per 100g
They say less than 5% which is technically true, but this is what you might see on 4.5%, a more honest one label would be less than 2%.

This can be a problem since many recipes/advice on bleach is based on the presumption of using 4.5-6% bleach, so you might not be disinfecting as well as you think, or getting combinations wrong, e.g. homebrewer use a ratio of vinegar to bleach to sanatise stuff, so will have to adjust.

So the likes of this tesco bleach might be better value at 62c, more sodium hypochlorite per euro

    http://www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=257841394

it is only 750ml but 3 times as strong. It is a thick bleach though, some might want thin ones.

In fairness it does say 1.5g per 100g directly after that. its not like they have hidden the true bleach content.

In fairness it should say <2%. So I do think they have deliberately set out to attempt to hide it.

And in fairness most people would not have a clue to even look at it or understand it. Its the only bleach I have ever seen that was anywhere near this low. The mod of the homebrew forum, by far the most experienced brewer posting here, was unaware of it and using incorrect forumlas and possibly not sanitizing adequately.

The other danger is people using it to sterilize baby bottles and following presumptious guidelines. (Milton is just weak thin bleach mixed with table salt by the way, incase people think "bleach! on baby bottles!")

I fell for it myself as I saw the 5%, on the actual label I think the 1.5g was not right beside the 5% indication, I think the newer bottles do have them a bit closer. Also most bleach does not list the grams, only the 5% listing so people are usually not on the lookout for it. Years ago it was full strength.

It would be like having vodka saying <40%

And then elsewhere having "contains 1g of alcohol per litre" so its actually got very little alcohol, and people being unused to that terminology may not spot it. (that example may be illegal before some pedantic clown points it out).

I am not an anti-tesco zealot BTW, I am usually defending them. But this really bugged me.

they havent made much an attempt at all. its right there. It says <5% as 5% seems to be quite a common percentage solution to use. If you were looking for a 5% solution and you misread <5% as 5% then i'm not sure you can blame the manufacturer.

You have the likes of Dunnes and Supervalu with big signs listing all their prices as being the same each other. They're no different than each other.

Ordered online from tesco , around 11 products. When I placed order the cost was 42 odd and when I got delivery I just checked that all products were delivered. Imagine my surprise when I checked the bill 53 euro. Persil which I bought online was 9.39 not the 6 euro I ordered, a bottle of spirits 23 was now 27.50. I complained to Tesco and was told that my online order was just a guide price . Hello Persil up 50 per cent etc etc. Will not be ordering online again for sure.:mad::mad: RIP OFF

Spelt wholemeal flour now 3.94€. It's still 2.39€ in SuperValu and Dunnes. When I queried the increase, I was told this is due to worldwide increase of grains and cereals. All well, but then why no increase on other flour based goods, and why no increase in the other shops?

    who did you ask though?
i hope you didn't expect a sales advisor on €9 an hour to be aware of all of Tesco's pricing strategies.

 No, I asked CS on Facebook. I just asked whether that was a pricing error as the price had almost doubled

Was the offer still active the day your goods were delivered ? They have disclaimers on offers that if the offer is up on the day of delivery, it's the price on day of delivery that you pay, not the price on the date ordered.

I asked the price of a Moto G phone at Tesco a couple of weeks ago, for my husband's birthday - 199 euro sim free. I left it while I went to check his contract and went back to get it today. 250 euro, eek!

Amazon it is then, for 180 euro.

Tesco's own brand pulses, Chickpeas, Butter beans have doubled in price in the last year, now comparable to the brands they displaced.. (Bachelors)

I popped into a Tesco to do a normal shop, first time in months, not being near an Aldi/Lidl, just surprised how expensive everything is!

Cleaning products, good grief, the prices, even for own brand products is high.

I'm done, when Supervalu prices look okay, alongside you, then it's obvious you're not trying, or have just given up.

Tesco has a new slashing prices promotion.

Some are real reductions, some haven't been reduced at all. For instance, the yellow pepper is 79 cents, but also was 2 weeks ago
Having said that, reductions are welcome. I have to order from Tesco for full shops as I can't walk well at the moment, but whenever I go to Aldi or Lidl for a few items, I can't believe the price difference

Out of curiosity, I checked the price of spelt flour. Gone up again to 4.29. Only a week ago, I enquired whether the increase from 2.85 to 3.94 was a pricing mistake. SuperValu still 2.39

    Sungrown orange/apple 1.5l was €1.40, €1.50 €1.60
    Sungrown pineapple 1.5l €1.50 now €1.79

There is a great range of flours in the health section of Supervalu in skibbereen.
I have tried several and they all have been very good and a good price too.

Argos has Motor G 4G for €199 unlocked, or I bought mine for €175 at Meteor (locked)

There was an offer in store on the Finest party food, buy one, get one free. The offer was available online, then wasn't yesterday when I sent my order. I questioned the CS, they said that the offer was only available in store, and that as I was ordering the offer wouldn't apply when the staff picked up and scanned my items

Then, lo and behold, the offer online is now 2 for 8€, starting the 18th???

T Basmati Rice 1kg is €2.26 and the Aldi equivalent is €1.49
So how much is aldi's cheapest basmati rice then? if their midrange one is €1.49.

Because for it to be an equivalent and a proper & fair comparison between supermarkets they should have the same amount of ranges. If not state this is the case to keep it all transparent.

I am guessing aldi probably only have 1 basmati for sale. Tesco have finest/tesco/everyday value, which are €3.69/€2.26/€1.49 per kilo. So the cheaper one matches aldis.

I get the value one all the time and find it fine. Just like tesco cheapest sugar, cheapest milk, cheapest 100% apple juice, chicken fillets, cheddar. Note I do not say "everyday value" since that range it not always cheapest.

Some of the value range it horrendous but there are many products that are fine as it would be difficult to make a hugely cheaper version of them, so instead they just put hugely different markups on them and hope suckers will pay over the odds for what could well be the same product.

Tesco have many new ranges which are not immediately recognisable as tesco products. Some in or around the same price as the value range, but far better quality. You can usually examine ingredients listings to get an idea, if you know what to be looking for.

There's a very distinctive look and feel to the unbranded own brands if you've got the eye to notice.

Shopping shouldn't be a game where you have to figure out, for everything you buy, what is the best value. Tesco still haven't realised this. They see their customers as mugs. That's why they're losing market share every month.

The original post refers to the Tesco price promise. I got the information directly from the receipt (removed).
In addition you'll see some other interesting differences.

    Edit: receipt removed

Got this sent to me from family in the UK on a deal on wine in tesco.
12 bottles of wine for 53 stg or 60/Euros.
Sorry can post links from phone.
    The wine is the following

    Campo viejo tempranillo wine

Its the wine we actually drink so I said great, went onto tesco Ireland to order 24 bottles and
There is actually a sale on it in tescos.
Reduced to 10 Euros a bottle! More than 100% price increase than going to newry to buy it in there shops....

    Unbelievable

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

firstly, £53 is approx €67.50, if you used the Visa/MC card rate which is more realistic it'd be closer to €69.

secondly, if the wine is on offer here it's likely on offer in the UK too to start with, and may also include an additional multibuy discount, spend & save voucher or discount code.
your €10 bottle of wine may have also been eligible for such extra discounts.

thirdly VAT in Ireland is 3% higher, and excise on a bottle of wine is approx 70c (54p) higher.
