Kindle Fire & prime account

Looking at a fire hdx and hoping someone here can recommend either getting or not getting one. Should I steer well clear seen as theres no google play store? Can I put files (music/video) on like a normal android device? They seem like great value.

Also is there any hassle with an Irish amazon prime account, I'd read before that you would need an UK address just to sign up.

There was an announcement a good while back that accounts in Ireland and Luxembourg could be used for the Kindle Fire HD (and presumably HDX).

What do you intend using it for? I own a Fire HD and it seems to have trouble with some video files. The Netflix app is fine but downloaded videos seem to have minor playback issues.

Regarding apps, there is just the amazon store AFAIK. There might be ways to load Google apps onto it. The OS is a modified version of android and a lot of the apps on the play store are available such as Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, etc...

Giving to the missus as a xmas present, youtube is missing from the amazon store, instagram too, no whatsapp either. These are some of the apps she uses the most on her phone. I reckon I'd sign up for a prime account to use the instant videos.

Are there alternatives to these popular apps, I don't really want to have to go jailbreaking a new device.

I'm not sure. I think I'm the only person I know who doesn't use whatsapp or instagram. Odd that they never released a youtube app but you can use the browser to get around that.

I love my fire but if I went back, I think I'd go for a Nexus. I use it primarily as an e-reader so I'm happy but if I wanted something more versatile, I think I'd rather the Nexus or perhaps an iPad depending on pricing.

What do you mean by more versatile, whats it missing?

Well, you can only put apps on it that Amazon allow. You can get around this in various ways but with an android tablet, you have the entire Play Store to peruse. In fairness, a lot of the apps are available from Amazon but like you said, there are notable exceptions.
