a decidedly average bull with a value of perhaps 1600 euro was sold for 4000. The right sucker came along at the right time, and the money to pay .

    he was sold for 4k!
    Well done to the owner

This week hundreds of bulls similar to this one will be slaughtered for being too old, too lame, too dangerous, too infertile.A great many more younger, non breeding ones will meet a similar fate. Who's trying to save them?

At best, this episode is an infantile farce. At worst, it's immoral.

At a time when the homeless are freezing to death on the streets of our cities, ebola is cutting a swathe through west Africa and Childline lacks the funds to do it's job properly was there really no better use of that 4 grand than to buy a commodity for well over it's actual value?

No one won here except the cunning farmer who sold this beast to these idiots. Not even the bull wins. What does he get to do? Live out a couple of years castrated and listless in a stall or a small field until he inevitably and rapidly loses the strength needed to support his own massive bulk and is put down by lethal injection, 100s of kilos of perfectly good meat dumped at a time millions of human beings are starving. Is that really preferable to dying quickly and painlessly now and being put to good use?

A far better use of this time and money would have been to donate it to some organisation that aids young people in the LGBT community. The best they could do now to salvage some good from this sorry debacle would be to slaughter the bull to recoup a fraction of the money they wasted and invest that in a genuine cause.

    Imbeciles.

    Gotta agree with you there.

It really hacks me off that this story has almost picked up a 'gay rights' vibe, like the bull is being persecuted. He wasn't going to be slaughtered because he was gay, he was going to be slaughtered because he was useless for what the farmer wanted him for and he'd have been just as much scheduled for death if he was infertile or physically unable to service the cows, but no-one would have cared about that.

I was surprised when I heard that. Normally if a bull is going to be castrated its done shortly after birth via a bloodless method. I don't know if you've ever seen a fully grown bulls schlong and balls but its massive and has several large blood vessels so id imagine chopping it off when the bull is fully grown would be a fairly big medical procedure and would be extremely painful and stressful for the animal. I find hard to understand why an animal welfare sanctuary would inflict that on the animal, especially if its supposedly gay and has no interest in females. Perhaps the lower testosterone levels would make it less aggressive.

LOL. I've seen quite a few in my time!
Think Nekarsulm covered most of the reasons why it was being done in his post :)
I'd hazard a guess that it will be done surgically under sedation & local anesthetic instead of a bloodless castration snips or banding.
Was just looking at some of the photos of his arrival. The farmer is laughing all the way to the bank, Benjy isn't worth €1500, never mind £5000

I wonder if the sanctuary would like a transgender twin calf that is neither male nor female.....a bargain at €2000. Would be good company for Benjy boy.

Great post. Its an utter farce and just shows how ridiculous a world we live on now.

Farmer? Got a bull that you want to sell for an inflated price? Claim its gay and hoards of idiots will turn up on your doorstep willing to offer you an insanely good deal.

I was reading on Pink News that an Irish bull called Benjy was saved from the slaughterhouse for showing more interest in other bulls than the cows he was supposed to breed with. He is now in an animal sanctuary in Norwich in the UK.

So what do Boardsies make of gay animals?:pac:

I bet one day, if he lives long enough, he'll try to fück a cow.

Maybe you could make sausages out of him for Lufties sausage fest.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

It does look like Benjy's former farmer owner is making a mint out of this. I wonder if Benjy will be happy in his new home. Maybe they could get another gay bull as a companion for him?

Well, according to Joe.ie which nobody should ever ever quote as a reliable source,
"Benjy arrived in his new home in the past few hours and if rumours are to be believed, he took quite a shine to a bullock named Alex over at the sanctuary in Norfolk within minutes of his arrival."
