There a scam because they take in millions without properly rewarding there players. There a charity because 1000s of people give there time and money with no financial reward. Now im.not in the mood to get all deep with you. If the gaa was audited its probably the most corrupt organisation in ireland thats my opinion of course.

I will never again donate to these scum, I see the travellers in my town drive in to them in there big 14cars and get everything, I called to them with a very poorly neighbour whos wife is dying of cancer and all ill say is I will never donate to these pigs again. the way we were treated was horrendous and we received no help at all, not a god dam thing, disguisted with this charity

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with your local SVP, but there's no excuse for referring to volunteers who by and large are doing their best as "pigs" or "scum".

And yes, anyone collecting money under false pretences should be named, shamed and prosecuted.

@sand678 you can request assistance from another svp branch if you were not happy with your local one.

I never donate money to charity. I donate my time as a volunteer which is just as important. There is a huge amount of waste. I have my reservations about SVdP, yeah people who have money to spend on drink, fags etc get assistance and its hard to see that but these people are selfish and won't give up their vices to buy food for their kids. Often without SvdP the kids get nothing. That's how I justify it in my head anyway.

I'd be inclinded to follow it up with the regional office.

One thing that often comes up with the SVP, if someone needs assistance they are expected to make contact with the society themselves. It would be quite unusual for a conference to make contact with someone on the basis of a neighbour calling on their behalf, obviously a husband or wife would be treated differently.

I'll admit that I see some of this through my volunteer work with SVP. I suppose it's important to note that we very rarely give cash, and never in a circumstance like this, it's always grocery vouchers or assistance with fuel bills etc. Often the weekly contact with someone is as valuable as what we bring.

Not everyone we help would be on social welfare either. There's a lot of 'middle class' families out there with no food on a Wednesday as the mortgage has taken everything. People would be genuinely surprised at the types of families we call to.

Do SVDP give cigarettes to inmates in prison or was that just an urban myth?

There are very good reasons why SVP likes the person themselves to make contact directly.

We got a call once from a 'concerned neighbour' to go see a woman as she was at the end of her tether and couldn't cope. We made discreet enquires and found out that the woman in question was fine and didn't want or need our assistance. It was a malicious call from a supposed friend to embarrass the woman as revenge over a squabble.

Well I'm only with them 6 years and we don't have a prison in our area so I can't say categorically but I wouldn't believe it's happening. Can't guarantee it didn't happen 50 years ago though.

The supermarket vouchers we give can't be used to buy cigarettes or alcohol.

whats really crappy about this, is the ripple effect that it will put people off donating to genuine charities.

Unfortunately that is the long and short of it.

I have become really disillusioned with the charity sector. A lot of people I went to college with went into the 'industry' and they aren't the type of people I'd be happy to hand over money to. One in particular has become very jaded about the whole sector after working for one of the largest and most high profile Irish charities. I'm more likely to hand a tenner to a homeless person than give money to charities for administration and salaries for people who earn more than I do.

what's the story with the one or two of them that do be always outside of M&S in Galway? Are they legit? I remember hearing negative things about the dudes outside of HMV a few years back so I've been pretty skeptical of ones that seem to be always about ever since.

They have a license to sell scratch cards and that's all. So you are buying a scratch card. What they are often doing is just collecting the money. God knows where the money goes. Their website is ****ing horrendous and mentions nothing about where they might keep animals or have a sanctuary.

This is from Amanda Haskin's LinkedIn account (director or one of the director's of the company:
We fund support and donate to small various animal groups and organisations around Ireland that we have contacted and have accepted our help. We look for groups that have recieved no grants or funding from any goverment source and try and help them out as much as possible.

According this article I found, they've stated before that the people collecting in their name have nothing to do with Animal Ark.

    http://www.leinsterexpress.ie/news/your-community/bogus-pair-spotted-collecting-money-1-6287096

They sometimes impersonate ARC, an an animal welfare organization from Cork too it seems.

Ha ha, thought the same thing myself. Their webmaster page is absolutely atrocious for 'professionals'. Also, one of the file formats they accept on their contact page is a zip... seriously!!!!

    what about Rehab?

They received over €80 million in funding per annum of taxpayers money.. they fail to disclose how all of this money is spent, the manager also fail to disclose their salary, and they refuse to appear before the Public Accounts Committee to answer any questions regarding all of this.

The Animal Ark crowd are very small buns when compared to Rehab.
