Replace flushing mechanism in 'standard' cistern?

I have two standard toilet cisterns, i.e. the 'old-fashioned' type with a handle, not a push button, and I was wondering if it is possible to retro-fit these with a system where you can have two different sized flushes? I can upload a photo of the current mechanism if required.

Most standard syphons now have the dual flush option. Small removable plug on the side of them.

Not as good as the two button type.

How do they work? Push and release for a short flush, hold down for a full one? Can I just go to any plumbing supplies place and ask for a standard dual-flush one and it'll fit any cistern?

Could it be the one I have already would have that? It was put in in 1995 or thereabouts IIRC.

    Why's that?

Would it be possible to fit a button type into the hole where the existing handle goes? I'm not sure how handy it'd be pushing the button horizontally as opposed to vertically though.

I retrofitted a button type, the button sits out about one inch out of the face of the cistern. Take a look at that before you buy to be sure you're happy. Got it in Chadwicks, about €30 I think.

Make sure to ask for a quick fill flush pipe. Some of them are awful slow.
