Loose Change

For the last year or more I've been throwing loose change from my pockets into a jar. It's full so last night I started to count it and I got E70 in 20c and 10c coins.

Question is where to get notes for it? Would a local shop take it or do I have to go to the bank and have to pay money to give them money :rolleyes:?

well done to you it mounts up alrite.. It is very annoying though you think wow great I have all this change and as you say where do you take it.. Me thinks you would be better off asking the local shop.. The bank charge you extra for it, and those machines aswell while they are great you get charged for them too..

Maybe split it into tens and go to local convenience shops, they're usually in need of change.

Get coin bags from the bank and bag it up. Deposit to account.

Put it in a couple of money bags from Post Office and they will change it.

It's counted and bagged. Bank isnt open until Monday and I need cash now.

Any bank OP, as long as its bagged and sorted. Although many now have restricted times on when they will take coin.

Many Centras, Maces, etc, now have a coin counter, as long as you dont mind giving up 7-9.5%.

Edit, scrap the bank idea, just seen you need it now.

Pop into you local Centra/mace. Chat to the manager/supervisor nicely, see what they can do. Its a friday night, they might be greatful for it.

Why do people think the self service till would charge you extra?
They don't.
However, they've changed the coin basket so you have to really put them in 1 by 1 now. They used to have a circular one you could just chuck the coins into and it'd countn them and take it off your bill.
Still, I'd probably go for that option. Or just start spending it bit by bit.

I would. I actually like when the time comes to count all your collected spare change because you don't know how much it's going to be. It's always more than expected.

Coin hoarding is stupid. It causes a shortage of coins in circulation meaning that more have to be minted. It is a waste of time and effort for the hoarders who have to count it and bag it. And often lose money cashing it in. The usual argument is that is surprising how much it amounts up to. Well I would be more than surprised if it amounted to more than was put in the jar.

Far easier just to spend the coins when shopping. It isn't difficult.

My jar is half full of only 1 cents and 2 cents, got bored a while back and it came to about 13 euro. I don't keep the 5cents upwards as the drinks machine in work takes them

I'm about three months in to my current run. It's a 5 liter bucket this time though so it could be a while. I relish the thought of counting it in... about two years.

We'll have a competition. We'll all have a guess as to how much is in it and whoever is closest gets to keep the lot. The only catch is that you've got to count it for us though....:)

I just tip the wallet in whenever there's coins in it, the zippy part for coins is pretty small and I hate when the wallet gets fat and heavy because of a couple of euro. It's as well sitting in there as in my current account really.

A few years ago (pre kids days!) I filled one of those one gallon whiskey bottles. All coins went into it. Took about two years to fill but had about €1000. I bought a pool table - which is hardly used these days (no time due to kids - oh the irony!!!!!).

I have two point counting jars. You put the money in a slot & it adds up the amount as you go.

One for copper (€12.73 currently), one for larger coins (€87.25 currently). Started doing it about two months ago. Surprising how quickly it adds up.

Similar here. One for 20c and below, and other for 50c and up. Although often dip into the larger coin jar.

Actually have a third one for ALL sterling coin. Always have loads coming back from London, despite trying to feed some of it into the Underground self sevice machines, to top up my Oyster Card before heading home, so already have credit for next time I go over. Always have a handful coming back from anytime in NI.

Coin hoarders. The Central Bank wants you to stop hoarding coins. Put them back into circulation. You are causing problems for normal people.
