have a 07 toyota auris when i fill the car the gauge goes up to full and the gauge drops accordingly until about 3 bars left and never falls below this. basically the tank will be empty and still 2 or 3 bars showing on gauge.
is it a difficult problem to fix?

Probably a sticking fuel level sender. Shouldn't be too hard, but the tank will have to be drained and possibly removed. The sender unit might be accessible from the boot floor, though.

Or under rear row of seats maybe.

The digital gauge to tell the outside temperature is also gone mad as in might read 22 degrees a day like today. would this suggest an electronic problem with the dash??

Sounds more like the BSi. They will usually just disconnect the Battery for 10 minutes and see if that solves it.
After that it could get costly, unless it's a recently purchased car with some form of warranty.

The fuel tank connections are probably under the rear seat. If you disconnect them the gauge should read empty, if not you don't have a problem with the sender and it's looking more serious.
Have a google of 'toyota fuel gauge problem' seems to be a liitle bit of an issue with some of them.

The problem most likely in the combination meter (instruments/clocks), a crack in the circuit board causes this issue. Remove (5 mins work) and get it out to Logic Automotive in Rathcoole, Peter should be able to fix it.
